Margot Johnson tells us about Love Takes Flight and Love Leads the Way

Welcome to Canadian romance writer, Margot Johnson!

Margot Johnson grew up in a family of writers and has always loved books and writing.

She is the author of LOVE TAKES FLIGHT and her new release LOVE LEADS THE WAY. Before turning her focus to the fun writing life, Margot held leadership roles in human resources and communications. Her motto is "Dream big and work hard."

When not writing, she loves to connect with family and friends, volunteer with SK Writers Guild, and walk at least 10,000 steps a day (except when it's minus 40!) She lives in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada with her amazing husband and beloved golden retriever.

Tell us about your life outside of writing.

Normally, my husband and I spend lots of time with family and friends. We love to travel, and the UK is next on our wish list. I was invited to the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, but it was cancelled due to Covid. I’m still hoping to attend another year. Closer to home, I’m in a monthly book club and a romance writers’ group.

Do you have a work in progress?

I have two novels drafted that are ready for final polishing, and I just wrote a fun story for The Wild Rose Press Cookies Series that will be published next Christmas. Ideas are always percolating in the back of my mind.

What was the most difficult section/piece you ever wrote? What made it difficult?

I can’t think of one that stands out. Some days everything flows, and other days feel bumpy. I had to learn to add details involving all the senses to bring every page to life. Sometimes I have to pause and really think about how a scene sounds or smells.

What sort of research do you do for your work?

My books are contemporary romance, so a lot of my ideas come from my imagination and the world around me. In my first book, Love Takes Flight, the hero is a military jet pilot. I know nothing about flying but worked with a pilot who shared his expertise and reviewed sections for accuracy. Sometimes, I draw from life experiences. For example, my heroine in Love Leads the Way works in Human Resources like I did for many years. Her mother has dementia, and I reflected on my dad’s experience with Alzheimer’s.

Which books and authors do you read for pleasure? Is there an author who inspires you?

I enjoy women’s fiction like The Rosey Project and mystery/thrillers like A Nearly Normal Family. I loved Girl with a Pearl Earring. My book club often gets me to stretch and read books I might not pick up otherwise (American Dirt, Indian Horse).

New York Times Bestselling author Mary Balogh is part of our local romance writers’ group. She is an inspiring role model and always shows interest and support to writers at all levels.

Was there a person who encouraged you to write?

My dad, Ian Bickle, was a journalist and editor, and he encouraged me to write from an early age. He passed away thirteen years ago, but I think of him often when I write and hope he knows I follow in his footstep. My sister Donna Gartshore writes for Harlequin Love Inspired, and she is always there to cheer me on and talk about writing.

LOVE LEADS THE WAY

She coaches him in team leadership, but do they both need lessons in love?

Single mom Tessa Shore runs a successful leadership program at work and supports a mother with dementia. She can handle any challenge in her jam-packed schedule as long as nothing spins out of control…especially her feelings.

Engineer Mark Delaney is an expert on pipelines at the same company, but his interpersonal skills need a makeover. Advancing to an executive job requires enrollment in a leadership course he doesn't think he needs.

When their professional and personal issues entangle, life at the office gets a lot more complicated. Romance is impossible…or is it?

LOVE TAKES FLIGHT

After the devastating loss of her husband, Erin Humphrey is rebuilding her life. She runs the Canine Corner dog kennel in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

Then a prairie blizzard strikes just as Erin's family arrives for the weekend, followed by a handsome but difficult client, Drew Dixon. A daring jet pilot, Drew is a magnet for Erin's young son Noah, upsetting Erin who is terrified of flying. Drew is at a crossroads because of a career-threatening mistake.

Despite an icy start, the couple warm to each other, sparking an undeniable attraction. But will their secret fears keep Erin and Drew's love from soaring?

What would you say are your strengths as an author?

Research is my strong suit. I have a burning need to get things I write about, correct. For example, phone calls are not traced, the location is instantly known. That’s how call display works. I’m an information technology systems architect with experience in many industries, including telecommunications. They say to write what you know. I’m fortunate to have experienced a lot over my lifetime, scuba diving, sailing, travel, archery, and firearms. My friends and family help me with their occupation and life expertise as well. Like my husband. He is a pilot, a blacksmith, and Renaissance man. I am fortunate to have many resources, which means tons of possible plot idea too.

How often do you write, and do you write using a strict routine?

My plan is to write five days a week. Sometimes life happens and it’s less. Other times, I get more done than planned. Those are the best day. I like to get at least a thousand words down each session. Once the first draft is complete, end-to-end, I employ a layer process to flesh out the characters, setting, and plot details.

Five years from now, where do you see yourself as a writer?

I hope I’m still producing good mystery stories and having fun doing it.

If you could offer once piece of advice to a novice writer, what would it be?

Educate yourself on the publishing process. Research publishers for the genres you write, find out what they are looking for, read their lines. When you know how it works, it’s easier to be more patient waiting for responses. Make notes on what you find out and share with other up and coming writers.

What would you consider to be the best compliment a reader could give your book?

What else have you written? I want more.

What are you working on now?

I’ve just completed the first book in a new series. The Wrong Words,  Adam Norcross Mysteries. It’s with my publisher and I’m waiting on edits and a release date.

Currently, I’m working on Condo Crazy, the third installment of the Musgrave Landing Mysteries. Gladys Wyatt is trying to make ends meet with her cottage bakery business. She has just moved into her new condo apartment and strange things are happening. Thefts, flooding, and her neighbour’s dog has been injured.  In addition, who is the guy hanging around in the brown Plymouth? Why is a plumbing van parked everyday across the street every day? And what happened to Dwayne Davis, the condo board president?

DEATH AND CUPCAKES

Jane Westcott has come home to the village of Musgrave Landing and nothing will be the same again. She has inherited her aunt's cafe and a good thing too. Her personal finances are in a shambles. Jane must make a go of the business and leave her past in Vancouver behind. She plans to run the small cafe by the ferry wharf and bake to her heart's content until her sister receives a letter from their dead aunt, which alludes to finding a key. But where is Jane’s letter? On top of this, the mayor has gone missing and an old flame, Jack Birch, comes back into her life. The trouble is, the mayor gets himself murdered, and Jack finds the body with the help of Vimy, a former K-9 from the RCMP. Jack also finds a letter on the body addressed to Jane, and he is worried she was somehow involved with the village's philandering mayor, Tim Stanhope. As the investigation unfolds, it turns out that money has gone missing from the village accounts and an old friend of Jane’s, Dirk Ipkiss, might be involved. Then there's the fact that Jack found the murder weapon, and it belongs to Jane.

Vince Spinnato reveals My Pursuit of Beauty

Welcome Vince Spinnato as he launches his memoir!

Beauty Comes from Within:

Jars, Bottles and Tubes

At age 10, Vince Spinnato watched TV soaps with his grandmother and became enamored with the characters on The Young and the Restless who owned a cosmetics firm. He vowed he would follow in their footsteps one day and even chose a name—VS Vincenzo—a brand one of his companies still bears.

In his memoir, My Pursuit of Beauty: A Cosmetic Chemist Reveals The Glitz, The Glam and The Batsh*t Crazy, Spinnato shares the inner workings of the multi-billion-dollar beauty industry with entertaining tales about creating beauty products for megastars like Michael Jordan, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, Lindsay Lohan, Gwen Stefani, Damone Roberts, and scores more.

He also shares some of his life’s most bizarre situations. There was the time he survived a tornado in Iowa while being tethered to a bridge, and another when he became stuck inside a resort water slide that involved melted butter and rescue by the fire department. Then there was his terrifying flight post 9/11 that was nearly shot down by fighter pilots.

Spinnato dealt with incessant bullying, body dysmorphia, trichotillomania* and multiple betrayals on the bumpy road from his grandmother’s couch in Vineland, New Jersey, to becoming a serial entrepreneur and expert in the beauty industry.

“A devastating breakup was the last straw,” he says. “At age 20, I got in my car, waved goodbye to New Jersey and headed to Hollywood, determined to launch my career.”

His modus operandi was to breeze into famous salons and announce that he would return in the morning to begin his internship. Once he felt he had both the expertise and the financial means, he founded TurnKey Beauty, Inc. specializing in the development of beauty and personal care products for celebrities under their own names, as well as brands for entrepreneurs and retail companies.

Spinnato has created more than 300 products for retail establishments like Banana Republic, Costco, Johnson & Johnson, Sephora, Victoria’s Secrets, Body Works and others. He recently launched a luxury skincare line, Caviar & Diamond, under his VS Vincenzo brand.

“To acknowledge those who helped me, I’m passing it forward by establishing two arts scholarships in my father’s and grandfather’s names, supporting Wells of Life, which provides clean water wells to villages in Uganda and volunteering at the Wounded Warriors Project with my comfort dog, Savannah,” Spinnato says. “To me, success means the financial ability to make a difference in the lives of others.”

He’s also developing a product line to help the approximately one to four-percent of the U.S. population who suffer from trichotillomania,* a hair-pulling disorder that Spinnato experiences.

*NOTE: Trichotillomania, also known as the “hair-pulling disorder,” is a type of impulse control disorder. Sufferers have an irresistible urge to pull out their hair from their scalp, eyelashes and eyebrows.

"'Dynasty, ' produced by my dad, Aaron Spelling, sparked the imagination of my friend, Vince Spinnato, and inspired him to turn his dreams of developing luxury beauty products into a reality. His no-holds-barred memoir describing his struggles to the top is brutally honest, hilarious and heartbreaking. I couldn't put the book down."  -Tori Spelling, actress/author of "sTori Telling"

"Vince's honesty and his scientific talent about the skincare industry has made me love this book and his products. Growing up with the legendary iconic faces of MGM royalty like my mother, Judy Garland, I understand the trust you need to have in today's confusing billion-dollar beauty industry. When you find the right 'wizard' you are grateful and stay connected." -Lorna Luft, singer/actor, "The New York Times" bestselling author of "A Star is Born: The Film That Got Away" and five-time Emmy award-winning producer of the mini-series "Judy Garland: Me and My Shadow"

"As a beauty professional and founder of the largest 'meeting and discussing' book club in the world, I knew from the first chapter that this was from a perspective of creating 'beauty' that I had not read before. I flew through the pages. Five Diamonds in the Pulpwood Queen Recommended Reading list. This dazzling gem is the Official 2021 February Pulpwood Queen/Timber Guys Book of the Month Club Selection!" -Kathy L. Murphy, founder of International Pulpwood Queens and Timber Guys Book Reading Nation and author of "The Pulpwood Queen's Tiara Wearing, Book Sharing Guide to Life

About Vince:

Most 10-year-old boys spend afternoons riding bikes and playing sports. Me? I sat on the couch snuggled close to my grandmother and watched “The Young and the Restless,” a popular TV soap opera. I was obsessed with the fictional Abbott family’s cosmetic business and vowed that I would one day own my own company. I even picked a name, VS Vincenzo, my name and initials in Italian, which remains one of my product lines today. Then along came that over-the-top night-time saga, “Dynasty,” and the obsession to become rich and famous reached a whole new level.

At age 20, I moved to Hollywood and incorporated TurnKey Beauty Inc. where I began developing skincare products for celebrities like Michael Jordan, Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, Jessica Simpson, Lindsay Lohan, French Montana, The Housewives of Orange County and many more. But I’m still waiting for the “rich and famous” part!

In true Vinny Spinnato fashion, I bumbled my way to success despite the people who promised moon dust and delivered muck. There were also the funny/tragic events like the time I accidentally spilled red wine and linguini all over Lauren Bacall’s designer white suit while we were lunching. Another time, I got stuck in a water slide that required melted butter, the fire department and a large dose of public humiliation. Not to mention the time post 9/11 that I flew on a commercial jet accompanied by fighter planes prepared to shoot us down.

There were also some wonderful people who helped me along the way, and I like to pass it forward. I’ve established two annual college scholarships for talented seniors in the arts at my former high school in Vineland, NJ. and recently donated a well to Wells of Life, a provider of clean water in Uganda. Dogs have always been a part of my life and my beautiful therapy dog, Savannah, and I work with the Wounded Warrior Project.

As the result of my bizarre life—including a lifelong struggle with Trichotillomania, a largely unrecognized psychological condition involving obsessive-compulsive hair-pulling—I spent years on the proverbial therapist’s couch. When I couldn’t stand to listen to myself another minute, I took my shrink’s advice and wrote a memoir: “My Pursuit of Beauty:  Cosmetic Chemist Reveals The Glitz, The Glam and the Batsh*t Crazy.”

I was thrilled when it was selected by Kathy L. Murphy as the 2021 February International Pulpwood Queen and Timber Guys Book of the Month, the largest meeting and discussing book club in the world with more than 800 U.S. chapters and 20 in foreign countries. Holy crap!

Tell us about your life outside of writing.

I have spent the last 12 years living as an expatriate life globally. I was a Human Resource Specialist in UAE, Europe and Southeast Asia. Writing and travelling as a freelance. This gave me the exposure to learn in depth about cultures, languages and authentic foods, and it is a real beauty to me. Besides writing, I am involved in various volunteering work such as counselling and give motivational talk to the youth's today.

Do you have a work in progress?

I am currently working on my unfinished novel. The series of my first book is called "The Living Secret". It takes longer than I thought, plotting the characters, assembling the main and protagonist back and forth... isn't this typical writer? Too many stories and very limited time, as I ended in limbo. Nevertheless, this year, I am determined to complete the story with no excuses. So, stay tuned and watch my space!

What was the most difficult section/piece you ever wrote? What made it difficult?

Both books are challenging to me. However, I don't deny, writing my new release book called "Hear Me"-end of mental health stigma was the biggest challenge. I wrote this book during the lockdown and I was feeling isolated in my own cubicle space and it is hard. I've interviewed individuals who suffered from mental health for two hours and going through their journey is devastating. I feel honoured working on this book and I've learned a lot more than what I've learned in school. Case studies always teach me and yet surprise me in many ways. That is the beauty of writing this book. And not forgetting my group research team from clinical psychology, add value into it.

Which books and authors do you read for pleasure? Is there an author who inspires you?

I've always enjoyed classic books and my favourite author of all is Ivo Andric. The Yugoslav novelist, poet and have won the Nobel Prize in Literature during his late 50s. He inspires me in many ways. In terms of writing, poetry and style of writing. He is very much involved in humanity and wrote from the heart and he sees people like nobody else. I wish I could meet him and spend time sharing about his creative mind, how I wish. Rest in peace Ivo.

Was there a person who encouraged you to write this book?

One person who inspired me was my soulmate friend who sat alone in Malta nothing else, only with his beloved cello and boring job, accountant. Yet he survived. He is the only person who has driven me to where I am now. He read and criticized honestly without no prejudice. I remembered we used to share moments together every time I visited Malta. He played beautiful music and I wrote poetry. It was a remarkable memory.

HEAR ME

Collections of 35 stories and essays illustrate depression and suicidal thoughts through different voices. The book covers a spectrum of experiences, from spiraling into a depression for the first time to living with it to recovering. True inspiring individuals must read and with the support group of research from clinical psychologists.

Ellen Butler reveals Pharaoh’s Forgery (Karina Cardinal Mystery 4)

Welcome to award-winning author Ellen Butler!

Ellen Butler is the international bestselling author of the Karina Cardinal mystery series and award-winning historical suspense, The Brass Compass. Her experiences working on Capitol Hill and at a medical association in Washington, D.C. inspired the mystery-action series. The Brass Compass has won multiple awards for historical fiction and is compared to such bestselling novels as Kristen Hannah’s The Nightingale. Ellen lives with her husband and two children in Northern Virginia.

Do your characters come before or after your plot?

When I began my writing career, I started in the romance genre and my novels were character driven. I had vague ideas of where the plotline went, and what the climax would be, but the relationship came first. I allowed the characters to drive the love story. However, as I moved into the thriller/mystery genre, trying to panster a mystery plot became a nightmare with lots of rewrites and plot holes. I realized the need to fully plot my stories. Now the plot comes first. Since I write a series, many of the characters are already developed, I simply slip in new characters as needed to fill the out the storyline.

How do you choose a villain and how do you make them human?

My historical spy novel takes place during WWII, so my villains were laid out for me in the form of Nazis. However, I will share a character with you who is a bit of an enigma. He is a French soldier in the German Army. He begins to help my heroine, however when they come upon members of his military unit, he turns her over to his commanding officer. The reader is led to believe that he will still help her, but he doesn’t come to her rescue while she’s being brutally interrogated. The interrogation ends when Allied forces attack the town. Our Frenchman is killed by Allied forces, so we don’t really know if he would have helped her or not. Some readers dislike his character because he is not shown to be black or white, but rather someone who wants to help, but not enough to put his own on hide on the line. Is he true villain or is he simply a coward? Are his actions, or lack of, only human?

Do your reading choices reflect your writing choices?

It’s funny you asked this question. Initially, I would have said, “maybe somewhat.” However, during Women’s History Month, I’ve been writing a series on my own blog about female authors who influenced me. They are all thriller/mystery/suspense authors. While I do read many other genres today, in my formative years, I’ve come to realize mystery authors were my go-to. And it all started with Nancy Drew.

Which type of characters are your favorite to write?

Sidekicks with personality. I enjoy writing quirky characters like Karina’s neighbor, Mrs. Thundermuffin. She wears wacky clothes, walks her cat, Mr. Tibbs, on a leash, and seems a little dotty. She ends up drawing Karina into a chaotic adventure with an Egyptian death mask and the reader finds there is much more to Mrs. T. than meets the eye.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on the next Karina Cardinal mystery, Swindler’s Revenge. Someone has framed her FBI ex-boyfriend, Mike Finnegan, and he delves deep undercover to find out who. He needs help from outside the FBI and reaches out to Karina. Even though it’s been splitsville for a couple of months, she still considers him a friend and believes he’s innocent. Classic Karina, she delves in with both feet regardless of the dangers that surround her actions. Swindler’s Revenge releases September 2021.

What sort of research do you do for your work?

LOTS and LOTS. Luckily, I live in the Washington, D.C. area, and I have friends who work (or worked) for certain 3-lettered agencies, police departments, and on Capitol Hill. I tap into those folks for dialog and behaviors for my Karina Cardinal characters. I do additional research depending on the plots. For instance, the first Karina Cardinal mystery, Isabella’s Painting, incorporates the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum heist which happened in 1990. $500 million worth of art was stolen and never recovered. I spent long hours researching the numerous theories as to who stole the art and why. I interviewed a retired FBI agent who worked in the Art Crimes division during the heist to get his take on the burglary. I write Afterword’s for the Karina Cardinal mysteries focusing on a particular aspect of my research, to inform the reader what is fact vs. fiction.

Pharaoh’s Forgery (Karina Cardinal Mystery 4)

Margaritas, mayhem, and murder. Too bad her only defense is a cocktail umbrella.

After some of Karina Cardinal’s recent adventures—her lover Mike Finnegan would call them scrapes, jams, or pickles—she’s more than ready to blow this D.C. pop stand for a short girls’ trip to Mexico. Until Jillian’s roller skate wreck blows their plan out of the water.

With Jilly injured and Mike working, her fellow lobbyist Rodrigo volunteers to share some sun, sand, and margaritas in Cancun. It’s tough to relax, though, knowing what’s in her suitcase. A package she promised to hand off to Mrs. Thundermuffin in Mexico.

Mrs. T’s evasive maneuvers around Karina’s questions wave more red flags than a bullfighter, leaving Karina no choice but to take a peek. Okay, so it’s not a kilo of something illegal. It’s an Egyptian death mask that turns out to be a magnet for crooks, conmen, kidnappers, and outright killers.

When the situation explodes into chaos, Karina and Rodrigo are lucky to have friends in the right place—at their backs. But they’re in one hell of a jam. And they could be going home in something tackier than a souvenir t-shirt—more like a body bag.

She lives in Central Oregon with her husband―her basketball-playing college sweetheart. Between books, Melinda spends time with her husband remodeling their home by swinging a hammer, grouting tile, and wielding a paintbrush.
