The Many Faces of Gilda

When I first created the Gilda Wright Mystery series, I was actually the receptionist in a small martial arts school in Ontario. I was thrilled when my late agent, Dawn Dowdle, helped secure me a contract with Gemma Halliday Publishing. At that time, the series had a whole different name and we started out with this great cover - one I still love - and a title which suited the book!

Unfortunately, the series didn't attract the attention GHP was hoping so when the second book came out, they gave the whole series a makeover. Enter Gilda's Brunette phase. Definitely looks like a cozy mystery series. I probably would've liked them better if they weren't bright pink. Just me.

In March 2018, GHP decided the books weren't selling to their satisfaction and released them back to me. Since I already had my Wild Blue Mystery series with BWL Publishing, I offered the series to them. If they declined, the series would become my first foray into self-publishing. Lucky for me, BWL took them on and Gilda and the gang received new titles and new covers.

Gilda Wright thinks she’s landed a dream job as the receptionist at a karate school except she’s surrounded by handsome instructors, a local bookie, and more mysteries than she’d counted on.

As I mentioned earlier, I used to be the receptionist at a local martial arts school, so stepping in to write a martial arts mystery series just came naturally. Egos get bruised just as easily as shins and thighs. I transformed the dojo into a school where many people might be afraid to set foot in and let Gilda Wright take over to solve crimes in Sandstone Cove.

Gilda took the job at Yoshida Martial Arts to mend a broken heart and find her own inner strength after a bad breakup. It was less painful for her than Detective Jason Thayer who ended up head first in a fifty-pound bag of coffee beans. That was three years ago. Now that Gilda’s a blue belt heading for a brown belt grading (Sh! If you’ve already read Dead Without Pride, don’t give away how that turns out!), Thayer’s afraid to set foot in the school – or her house.

Lucky for Gilda, she has Sensei Mick on her side. As well as Marion Yearly, her best friend, and Kane Garrick…Gilda’s not sure what he is yet.

Here's the blurb for each book and their current covers!

Book 1 - Dead Without Honor

The scroll of the Four Possessions of the Samurai holds the key to a deadly mystery…

Gilda Wright thinks she’s landed a dream job as the receptionist at a karate school. Her boss, Sensei Mick Williams, is almost as demanding as he is sexy, but Gilda is inspired by the strength and courage of the people around her. When Gilda finds the body of one of the instructors in the dojo with a sword through his chest, she must find her own inner strength and fast! The police regard everyone in the school as suspects, including her boss, and it’s up to Gilda to find out what really happened. She follows the clues of the missing scroll of the Four Possessions of the Samurai down a deadly path filled with lies, deceit, and poisoned ninja stars. If she doesn’t watch her back, she just may become the killer’s next target.

Book 2 – Dead Without Glory

One body on the beach.

One crazy man with a sword accused.

One feisty receptionist on the case.

Gilda Wright’s life seems to finally be on track. Her love life is looking up and she’s planning and promoting a grand opening extravaganza for Sensei Mick Williams’ new martial arts school. But things go awry when their special guest referee for the opening exhibition match is found dead on the beach. To make matters worse, the school’s new weapon’s instructor Kane Garrick, who is enough to make any woman lose her head and her heart, stands accused of his murder. In spite of her promise to Mick and nearly everyone else in Sandstone Cove not to get involved, Gilda wades into danger one more time. The only question is, can Gilda catch the killer before the killer catches up to her?

Book 3 – Dead Without Pride

Gilda Wright has always had an open mind about the spiritual world. Dating the hot sensei at her martial arts school, Mick Williams, has taught her that mind, body, and spirit have a strong connection. But when her good friend and sometimes flirtation, Kane Garrick hires a pretty psychic at his New Age store, Gilda finds herself torn between being glad he's distracted and feeling just the teeny-tiniest bit jealous. A feeling that quickly turns to suspicion when the psychic's predictions begin to come true—including one about the murder of a well-known person in their small town! Suddenly Gilda wonders if the psychic's involvement in both her predictions and Kane's life are mere coincidence or a clever set up. It's up to Gilda to find the truth and track down a killer...before her own death becomes next on the psychic's prediction list!

Book 4 – Dead Without Shame

Once more, Gilda considers leaving the karate school to work for her friend Happy (no one has ever called him Harvey). When three men rob Happy Harvey’s Hangover Hut killing the woman at the front counter, Gilda is stunned to think that could have been her. Was this a mere robbery, or does someone have a vendetta against Happy, including his good friend Gary del Garda? The evidence keeps piling up while both her mother and another karate instructor come to town bearing secrets that may cost Gilda the life she loves in Sandstone Cove.

Book 5 – Dead Without Remorse

The fifth Gilda Wright Mystery arrived in August 2021 even though Book 5 was technically Book 2.5 - a bridge between Books 2 & 3 – and finally answered the mystery of how Mick lost his hearing.

Someone has destroyed the building that housed the former Yoshida Martial Arts School leaving numerous people injured and one dead. Considering Sensei Mick Williams owns the building, Gilda Wright needs to clear his name, plus track a killer before her suspects scatter like debris.

Book 6 – Dead Without Malice (June 2024 No Cover Art Yet!)

A family wedding is the last thing on Gilda Wright’s mind as she prepares to grade for her Black Belt. That is until one of the men in her life turns up dead after a post-karate training dinner and Gilda has a breakdown. Just when she thinks things can’t get any worse, her good friend Kane Garrick disappears. Can she straighten everything out before the wedding and her grading, or will she pack up and leave Sandstone Cove behind for once and for all?

Spring Has Sprung?

After a month of "extreme cold" weather days, I'm posting a picture I painted years ago just for a taste of summer! While we have had a lot of snow this winter, it's the bone-penetrating cold that has me the most down. In the past I would go tanning to take the edge off. This winter has been busy since September with my workload increasing at work, events, health issues, kids' activities, etc.
Top off all the local insanity with the book I had due to my publisher March 1st and I've been a meltdown waiting to happen!

I'm glad to say two great things have happened this past month.

  1. I got Book Two in my Yin-Yang Mysteries done! Woohoo!
  2. We are rebranding the entire series for a relaunch.
What does that mean? It means all those copies of Death of a Jaded Samurai will be worth money one day. The new series will be called Gilda Wright Mysteries and will soon have exciting new covers! It also means they books will have new titles. Sorry, no sneak peeks just yet. I'm gnawing on my fingernails in anticipation as well. I can tell you that there will be a new anthology coming this summer that will include a new Gilda Wright mystery.

Just had to squeeze in one more painting. It's been such a long time since I pulled out my paints. While today won't be the day, I think I will have to make time soon. One of my best memories of being a kid was sitting on our back porch painting. I didn't have a lot of skills back then, but I certainly had the passion! I think that's one thing I need to rekindle. My passion, both in my books and in my art.

Watch for some great new paintings, great new books, and a lot of awesome energy!
Yes, spring has certainly sprung - even if only in my imagination!

Back to School!!

Two of my kids started back to school today. For the first time, I was "banned" from the First Day of School by my 13 year old who chose to walk with his buddy to school. I have to admit, I wasn't totally upset. I saw it coming. He's humored me in the past couple of years since his older brother started high school. I walked with him more to get out of the house than in fear of him being snatched or anything. I loved the one-on-one time. The fact that I wasn't allowed to hug him within 500 feet of the school has been agreed upon since Kindergarten when he first told me "Not in front of the guys!"

My high school kid, ran out of the house so fast this morning you would have thought rabid dogs were after him. I guess he was afraid I'd catch up! Just kidding. He was in a huge hurry to get to school and change a couple courses, as well as seeing the buddies he hasn't seen all summer. I can't blame him.

The oldest moved out for his second year of University this weekend. He's got a great apartment in a perfect location and loves the independence. Of course, I've been getting texts all morning as he sorts out his student card, changes his schedule, discovered there's a buffet breakfast this morning on campus and so on. I thank God and the phone companies for the ability to text and keep up with his busy life.

Since the house is quiet, I've been restless. September, for me, is the real New Year. New books, new papers, new pens...that's just for me. Good thing the kids didn't need anything yet.

I love the smell of autumn, the Indian Summer days, the excitement that crackles in the air almost as loud as the leaves. It won't be long until the fuzzy sweaters and socks have to come out of the closet and the shorts get packed away.

Along with the cooler air, comes my two new releases!
Both The Mystery Lady (Books We Love) and Death of a Jaded Samurai (Gemma Halliday Publishing) are scheduled for release in November.

On top of it all, I've opened my e-mail to those seeking an editor. I have done some editing in the past as a courtesy for a few writers, but it's time for me to make it an equal exchange. While my prices are low for now, I will raise them in January. Check out my editing webpage at Diane Bator, Editor.

Exciting Week!

I've had a bit of a struggle lately to get things done and organized. Suddenly within a couple days, I have even more things on my plate! Far from feeling overwhelmed, I'm energized. Why?

1) I received a 2 book contract offer from Gemma Halliday Publishing for Death of a Jaded Samurai and a second book. Woohoo!! I love this series and have been waiting patiently for a publisher to pick it up.

2) I submitted the third book in my Wild Blue Mysteries series, The Bakery Lady, and got the cover art back. The Bakery Lady will be released in time for Christmas! I have arranged with BWL to release two more books in this series before we end it. That means 2 more books to write!

3) On a whim, I applied for a job at BTS emagazine and GOT IT! Starting in September, I will be the new Author Liaison for BTS. Not a huge job, but it should be fun and a great experience.

4) While talking to someone the other day, they told me how much I inspire them, which was really great to hear! I know my kids tell me that all the time, but from a total stranger it was amazing!

5) Last, but certainly not least! I've started my own Editing business. I know my start up prices are low, but I will raise them in 2015 as I gain experience. I posted my information on Facebook and had someone inquire a day later. I'm hoping this will become something that will start to pay bills one day!

Thank you to everyone who has supported me! I hope you will continue to support me in the future!

Special Guest Appearance!

I will be appearing on Southern Writers Magazine Blog "Suite T" on Aug 4, 2014 to chat about the excuses we make as writers. Be sure to stop by and say hello.

I also appear tomorrow (Aug 3) on my publisher's blog: Inside Books We Love.

What else have I been up to since I haven't updated my own blog in a while? A lovely vacation with the kids to the beach. We had a great time playing miniature golf, checking out a lighthouse, swimming in Lake Huron, riding a Yak Board, eating spider dogs and hanging out with some fabulous friends!

A walk upon the beach every day is great for the soul! All the little things were washed away we were left with laughs and a tan.

The great news is The Bookstore Lady and The Mystery Lady are both being released into print soon from Books We Love Ltd. and will be available in bookstore catalogues soon! Pictures will follow.
I have also finished edits on Death of a Jaded Samurai, which is back in the hands of my wonderful agent. Fingers crossed as she submits my book to a promising publisher.
In the meantime, I have a zillions things to update and some final edits to The Bakery Lady for November release. So glad I've had a few days to kick back and relax! I'll be back to work in full force next week.

Hope you all get time to relax and pick up a good book!

Saturday, May 24, 2014

Wow, it's been an entire month since I posted to my blog! Work, family, and a huge karate seminar have all taken me away for the month, but I'm back on the merry-go-round that is The Round Robin Blog Fest! This month, a long string of authors are chatting about a whole new topic:

What is the most inspiring, romantic, or dangerous setting

you have ever read or written?

I was born under the sign Cancer, a water sign. I'm a crab with a natural affinity for water so for my entire life, I've been fascinated with the ocean, lakes, rivers, and so on. As a result, I tend to write stories set near bodies of water. The Wild Blue Mysteries series doesn't directly mention the lakes until Book 2, The Mystery Lady, but Lake Erie is within an hour drive of Packham. The novel my agent is currently querying, Death of a Jaded Samurai, is set in a fictional small town called Sandstone Cove, which I picture on the shores of Lake Erie.

If I could spend my time writing in my favorite place, it would be on the deck of a small cottage on the seashore or near one of the amazing Great Lakes, which have the same inspiring feel. The rush of waves to shore are very calming and bring the romance of the ocean a little more inland. The nearest beach, along the shores of Lake Huron, is an hour and a half away, but is a wonderful place to visit!

Lucky for me, I get to attend a writing retreat next month in a building that resembles a lighthouse and sits along the edge of a babbling river. I'll take that for now. Let's take a wander over to Geeta Kakade's blog to see what kind of settings inspire her!!

Q & A with Juliet Waldron

Thank you to the lovely Juliet Waldron, a fellow author with Books We Love, for linking up and asking the tough questions today. You can find her information at the bottom of my post. Be sure to check out her website and novels!

1) What am I working on?  Lately, I'm working on moving my oldest back from University and helping him find a job. Writing wise, I'm at work on the third book in the Wild Blue Mysteries series called The Bakery Lady. I am also gnawing on my fingernails while my agent queries another one of my mysteries Death of a Jaded Samurai.

2) How does my work differ from others of its genre?  One of the book series that prompted me to become more serious about writing was Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels. I loved the sense of humor and romance, but wanted something a little more. My Wild Blue Mysteries also has a sense of humor and romance and is a borderline cozy mystery, meaning I use two points of view in each book - a man and a woman.
Death of a Jaded Samurai is a true cozy based in a small down, one protagonist, but set in a martial arts school. Since my whole family has trained in karate for many years, this setting seemed natural, especially after I started working at the school.

3) Why do I write what I do?  Several years ago, I stumbled on a writing contest for a murder mystery sponsored by Wynterblue Publishing. Up until then, I'd only written general women's fiction. After I won the contest with Murder on Manitou, I realized how much I enjoyed working on a whodunnit and went back to one of my novels--The Bookstore Lady--to make it more of a mystery.
I love cozy mysteries for their humor, their small town settings, and their friendly tone. I try to make my main characters people my readers would like to sit and have tea with or even befriend. Having appealing characters is a great way to attract and keep readers!

4) How does my writing process work? My books always seem to start off with a scene that pops into my head or appears in a dream. I have favorite places I sit and write, working on bits and pieces that I will eventually string together into one whole manuscript. Sometimes I manage to follow an actual outline, sometimes my characters or story take over and things go awry from my original plan.
Once my first draft is complete, I'll put the novel away for a couple weeks to detach from the story so it's easier to edit. Even better, I'll send either the whole novel or a few chapters to a Beta reader for feedback. After a few rounds of edits, if I'm happy with the book, I'll submit it to my agent for her approval.
