Diane Parkinson (Diane Scott Lewis) grew up near San Francisco, joined the Navy at nineteen, married in Greece and raised two sons in Puerto Rico, California, and Guam. She's a member of the Historical Novel Society and wrote book reviews for their magazine. She’s always loved travel and history and has had several historical novels published. Her latest book is a WWII romantic suspense, Outcast Artist in Bretagne.

Diane lives with her husband and one naughty dachshund in western Pennsylvania.

What is your latest release?

Outcast Artist in Bretagne, a WWII romantic suspense. “Can a damaged Englishwoman find love with her worst enemy, or will the brutality of war rip them apart? Is she a spy? Will he retaliate against Hitler? A dangerous love affair.”

What are you working on now?

I just finished a YA novel, Ghost of Lakelustre House, with my granddaughter. Now I’m working on a time-travel set in 1851 Victorian London. I’m still thinking of a good title for it.

Was there a person who encouraged you to write?

It seems I’ve always loved to write. Even before I learned my letters, I’d illustrate stories and ask my mother to write down what was happening.

What would you say are your strengths as an author?

Good research. I try to make my stories as authentic as possible. One author just told me all my novels are out the gate with a rollicking start. That’s something I’ve perfected over time.

How often do you write, and do you write using a strict routine?

I prefer writing in the morning, usually from 7am to noon. I used to carry around printouts and a red pen to edit and revise wherever I happened to be.

Five years from now, where do you see yourself as a writer?

Like every writer, I wouldn’t mind landing on the New York Times bestsellers list. In reality I hope to still be enjoying the process and thinking up new stories to create.

What was the most difficult section/piece you ever wrote? What made it difficult?

The Battle of Yorktown in my Revolutionary War novel, Her Vanquished Land. I wanted it as realistic as possible, but told through the eyes of a young woman who is masquerading as a boy. Grit and terror combined.

What sort of research do you do for your work?

I read books set in the time-period, recent and past research non-fiction, and extensive searches on the internet. I actually enjoy the research aspect of writing. I like to discover that exact shoe worn, book read, and the historical impact as in war and other upheavals.

Which books and authors do you read for pleasure? Is there an author that inspires you?

I love an author who writes lyrical prose, with beautiful metaphors. At my own publisher, Nancy Bell writes heart-warming stories that inspire. And Katherine Pym’s seventeenth century tales are full of quirky characters, period dialogue, and an adventure that draws you into that era.

Was there a person who encouraged you to write?

My mother when I was very young. And later on, teachers in English and Creative Writing classes. Best-selling author Sherryl Woods also encouraged me when I took a workshop from her years ago.

What would you say are your strengths as an author?

Making my stories as authentic as possible, and trying not to bog down the tale with too many details. I’ve found major historical mistakes in novels that would have been so easy to research with the internet.

How often do you write, and do you write using a strict routine?

I try to write every morning, from when I first rise to lunch. That’s when my mind is the freshest. If I’m working on something vital or time sensitive, I’ll put fingers to the keyboard at any time during the day.
