Ann Simas lives in Eugene, Oregon, but she is a Colorado girl at heart, having grown up in the Rocky Mountains. An avid word-lover since childhood, she penned her first fiction “book” in high school. The author of 42 novels, one novella, and one short-story collection, she particularly likes to write a mix of mystery/thriller/suspense, with a love story and sometimes, paranormal or supernatural elements. 

In addition to being a three-time Romance Writers of Amer­ica Golden Heart Finalist, Ann is also an award-winning watercolorist and budding photographer who enjoys doing needlework in her spare time. She is her family’s “genealogist” and has been blessed with the opportunity to conduct first-hand research in Italy for both her writing and her family tree. The genealogy research from century’s-old documents, written in Italian, has been a supreme but gratifying and exciting challenge for her.

What would you say are your strengths as an author?

I have staying power, By that, I mean I have dozens and dozens of book ideas rumbling around in my head. Some are started, others are nothing but a title, and some are a title and a one-liner, or even a paragraph. Fortune’s Cookie, to be released on May 19, 2023, fell into that final category. Another strength I have is writing good dialogue. What occurs to me is what I write. Afterward, I go over it (and over it), making sure it’s even better. In Fortune’s Cookie, the two main characters, Brynn and Rafe, exchange some amusing dialogue, which is always fun to write.

My final strength is that I’ve always been a daydreamer. I know, you’ve never thought daydreaming could be a strength, but for me, it is. I never know where my imagination is going to take me!

How often do you write, and do you write using a strict routine?

Usually, I write anywhere from five to seven days a week. However, I have a family, and they come first. My routine isn’t exactly strict, but I try to write at least two chapters a day. If I’m on a roll, it’s more, and if I’m not, it’s less.

I release three to four books a year now, so I write as much as I can. I also create my own book covers, which is (usually) fun. Sometimes, however, it can be aggravating, too, until I get the right mix. I have an editor (Nancy Jankow) who keeps me on the straight and narrow, and my husband, Frank, makes sure all my mechanical/gun stuff is right.

Five years from now, where do you see yourself as a writer?

In five years, I hope to have 60 books written. My hope is that readers never tire of reading what I’ve written, but let’s face it. I can’t go on writing forever, although if there’s an opportunity to write in the Hereafter, I’ll take it!

If you could offer once piece of advice to a novice writer, what would it be?

Don’t give up! Writing can be difficult, and then you wait and wait for a reply from the publishing house, or the agent, or readers. Don’t know what to do while you’re waiting? If you’re serious about writing, start working on the next book!

I started out with Harlequin/Silhouette (The Sugar Cup/Annie Sims), but life got in the way and I wrote only sporadically. After I left my last job, I decided to write fulltime. By then, indies were a thing, and Amazon had entered the publishing market, so I decided to try my hand at being an indie author. I haven’t regretted it, though I don’t make as much money, but hey, that’s the way life is! I like being an indie author and I like being my own boss, though sometimes, I wish I didn’t have to do my own marketing.

Whichever route you decide to take, whether as an indie or a publishing-house author, remember this: Always give it your best.

What would you consider to be the best compliment a reader could give your book?

I love it when readers tell me they couldn’t put the book down…not to eat, or sleep, or feed their husband or pets. It thrills me when they like the twisty-turny events in the book. I smile when they comment on the romantic elements of the story. I smile even bigger when they mention the book made them laugh out loud. I’m blown away when they tell me how many times they’ve read my books. I absolutely love my readers!

What are you working on now?

I just finished Torched to Die (book 9, Grace Gabbiano Mysteries), which will be released on July 28. These are my best-selling books, followed by Fossil, Colorado Books, and Christmas Valley Romances. I started another new series in November 2022 entitled Sugar Plum Creek Holiday Books. They’ll be released throughout the year (not in any specific order), and revolve around a holiday. Released so far are Merry Witchy Christmas and Stupid Cupid (the titles always reflect the holiday in the book).

Fortune’s Cookie is the first book in my latest series, The Bly Family. Fortune’s Cookie is a rom-com thriller about Brynn and Rafe. Up next is Diaper Dude (Derry and Knox, 2024), and after that, Sweet Talk (Casey and Gabe, 2025). I haven’t got Mollie’s story figured out yet. I’m also debating writing their mother’s (Egan and Flynn) story, or let it come naturally through the other books. All For Love, a stand-alone romantic thriller, will be released on October 20.

How many hours a day do you write?

Before I start a book, I create a Characters Word document. After that, sometimes I have a little research upfront, but mostly, I’m anxious to begin putting down words. Normally, I write five to seven hours a day, but I have gone as long as 10-plus hours or as little as an hour, depending on the book and family events or time constraints. I love to write, so for me, any time I spend writing is a bonus. I’ve been blessed with a fertile imagination, which results in a ton of ideas, and that’s probably why my brain never seems to shut down.

What is your favorite childhood book?

Alice in Wonderland is probably my favorite, if you don’t count the Nancy Drew and Judy Bolton mysteries (and all the historical romances) I used to read and reread when I was a kid. I’m not sure why Alice in Wonderland  is considered a kid’s book, because honestly, it takes an adult mind to understand half of what’s going on in the story (thanks, Lewis Carroll). I suppose we have Disney to thank for that, in part, because the movie is nothing like the book. I also read on the Internet that it’s classified as “literary nonsense genre,” and maybe it is, but I actually think Carroll was brilliant.

I didn’t read Alice until I was in high school, but it has stuck with me all these years. Another book I like is Pinocchio, which I read as an adult, in Italian. That’s another book that is absolutely nothing like the cartoon version, but is definitely better than what Disney produced.

I’ve had a love affair with reading my entire life. I have over 1000 books in my home library, and I’ve read thousands more aside from those. Reading is a great pastime. That said, I only read nonfiction when I’m writing, and that’s mostly for research. I don’t read fiction because I don’t want to be influenced by others writers, even inadvertently. When do I read fiction? When traveling, mostly. I have my iPad loaded with books I want to read, and I also have a shelf of over 30 TBR books. One of these days….

What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

Definitely, not having time to write, especially when I’m on a roll! Aside from that—and this doesn’t actually involve writing the books—marketing is the bane of my existence. As an indie author, I face constraints every day when it comes time to market my work. I sold my first book to Harlequin/Silhouette. That book was reprinted in 10 languages and it sold out worldwide, but it was still my responsibility to promote it. I think I still hold the record for books sold at our local Barnes & Noble.

Fortunately, I have a marketing background, which comes in handy. I know how to write news releases and where to send them, but it takes more than that to get my books noticed. I do as many events as I can, and I also speak to book groups and writers’ organizations. I feel it’s important to meet readers face-to-face, so I keep plugging along.

Five years from now, where do you see yourself as a writer?

In five years, I will have reached my 50-book goal (Now or Never is my 37^th book, not counting The Sugar Cup, which is the novella I sold to H/S). If I still have books I’m determined to write, my brain is still functioning properly, and my fingers continue to move across the keyboard at break-neck speed, I’ll write them. If not, well, I’ll enjoy re-reading what I’ve already written and maybe even get to the the books I have on the shelf.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

This question made me stop and count. Last week, I had four books in varying stages opened on my laptop. I’d work on one, then move to another, and another, then I said to myself, “This ain’t gonna work. Take them one at a time, in order of release date.” That meant I had to focus on Last Rites, which is book 6 in my Andi Comstock Supernatural Mysteries (October 2022). Hidden to Die, book 8 in m Grace Gabbiano Mysteries, releases on July 29. Merry Witchy Christmas, the first book in my Sugar Plum Creek Holiday Books, will release on November 18. The Sugar Plum Creek books will be slightly different than my Christmas Valley Romance series, which I felt reached its peak at 12 books.

After that? Fortune’s Cookie, January 2023. From there on, I have more than 60 story ideas rumbling around in my head. Most of them are already titled, and some even have a paragraph or two written. Probably another six are several chapters in and four more are in half-way mode. Either I should have started sooner to get serious about writing, or I’d better have another 20 years ahead of me to write. Just sayin’.

Was there a person who encouraged you to write?

Honestly, I couldn’t ask for more encouragement from my family. My husband is my first reader, and he keeps me on the straight-and-narrow concerning firearms, technical stuff, and mechanical aspects. But I digress.

Once upon a time, it started with my mom, who always championed my writing. She encouraged me to sign up to work on the school newspaper my freshman year in high school. By the time I was a senior, I served as editor. My high school English teacher once told me she was going to be harder on me than she was the other students because she knew I had the ability to write. Both Mom and Mrs. Barrett are gone now. I’m sorry neither of them got to read any of the books I have in print. I think they would have been proud of me.

Do your characters come before or after your plot?

I usually have my two main characters fixed in my head before I begin writing. I like to have their names established by then, too, although I have been known to change names mid-stream because I don’t think the name(s) I’ve chosen fits the character.

As for the other characters, some I know ahead of time, but most occur to me as I write, unless I’m working on one of series books. In those, many of the characters are the same, but the new plot introduces new characters. I keep a Word document going on every book. In that document, I list the particulars about the two protagonists, but I keep it simple for the other characters. I don’t like to go into a lot of detail about physical appearances because I like to let the reader’s imagination get a picture in their mind’s eye of what each person looks like to them. I do sometimes include some quirky or habitual traits for each character, though.

How do you choose a villain and how do you make them human?

I’m laughing, because most times, I don’t know who the villain is when I start writing. When I do, it often changes, due to circumstances changing as the plot moves along. But back to the question, I want the villain to be the last person you would’ve suspected. That means sometimes there are multiples to choose from. How do I make them human? Well, surprisingly, aside from the fact that villains are human, a lot of really bad people can’t be sorted out from the really good people. That’s because they’re good at hiding their bad attributes and behaviors.

I worked in law enforcement for a number of years, and I can tell you, not everyone who commits heinous crimes presents as a person who commits heinous crimes. Not that I knew him, but Ted Bundy is a classic example of a guy who came off as a regular Joe. Anne Rule, who wrote book about him, once told me that when she worked the hot line with him, she never would have pegged him for a man who abducted and murdered girls.

Do your reading choices reflect your writing choices?

I like to read mystery-thriller-suspense with a love interest, so, my answer is, yes. I also like some paranormal elements in what I read, as long as it’s not jammed down my throat. When I use supernatural or paranormal elements in my work, I keep that in mind.

Which type of characters are your favorite to write?

I like to write all kinds of characters. Ditzy ones, mean ones, naughty ones, happy ones. My favorites are the ones who have can engage in any kind of repartee—witty, serious, romantic, teasing. Those are usually my two protagonists. They can also have not-so-friendly repartee, because you know, they have to have some friction going on. They won’t always agree, they may not always do things the same way, or even think the same way, but they are falling in love, so they make things work. The bad guys, on the other hand, are the worst ever. I can’t even tell you what I know about how horrible people can be to each other.

What are you working on now?

Right now, I’m writing Framed to Die, which is book seven in my Grace Gabbiano Mysteries. The series is set in Coburg, Oregon, a small historic town about eight miles north of where I live. Grace is a sergeant with Coburg PD, and she has a large Italian family (which is something I know a lot about). After that, I’ll work on Yule Loge, a Christmas Valley Romance (#12), and another new stand-alone title, as yet undecided. Sorry to be so vague on the latter. I have four books partially underway and I don’t know yet which one I’ll tackle to finish first. By the way, the final book in the Fossil, Colorado Books series will be released in May 2022. It’s entitled, Now or Never.

What sort of research do you do for your work?

I love research and I love learning. Sometimes I have to force myself to STOP doing research and get back to writing. These days, I mostly do my research as I go. Often times, I get ideas for my story as I gather information. When I do research online, I make sure I can verify what I find with three other reliable sources, or I don’t use it. When I read books or articles, if I run across anything that makes me doubt what I’m reading, I double-check its authenticity. I also contact experts in the field, either in person or via email. My response rate is about 98%, which is pretty good, considering. I’ve also visited the morgue, done a police ride-along, contacted the FBI and DEA, and taken classes in Forensics and Criminal Investigation. Some of my research comes from personal experience. Even so, I usually confirm what I think I know to be fact to make sure it is. Of course, when I’m writing more “fantasy” elements, I can do whatever I want (like in The Wrong Wicca, Andi Comstock Supernatural Mysteries, Book 5).

For the last couple of years, I’ve read about the elk problem in Estes Park and I wanted to use those elk to my advantage. Run or Don’t starts out in Estes, which gave me an opportunity I was looking for. If you have a Facebook account, you can look at a page called Elk in Estes Park and find some wonderful photos. Elk are magnificent creatures, and I have to admit they are tasty, but they can be obnoxious and dangerous, too. You’ll also see moose and big horn sheep on the page, which is a plus.

     What would you say are your strengths as an author?

     I’m fortunate that I have determination, perseverance, and an innate ability to write. I also have an inquisitive mind, a good imagination, and I enjoy doing research. My books have lots of twists and turns, so for me, these attributes are a winning combination.

     How often do you write, and do you write using a strict routine?

     I write every day, seven days a week. I used to write 10-plus hours a day, but in December 2018, my husband and I were in a car crash that resulted in a torn tendon at my right rotator cuff. The injury has curtailed my 10-hour writing days, so now, I usually only write four-to-five hours a day.

     I wouldn’t say my routine is strict. Some days, I get no writing done at all. Life and family intervene, and for me, family comes first. I’m good with that, as long as I meet my self-imposed release deadlines, which are generally May, July, October, and November, and my promos get done.

     Five years from now, where do you see yourself as a writer?

     Five years from now, at my current rate of writing, I will have reached my goal of writing 50 books. It’s entirely possible I will retire from writing at that point. However, since I can’t see into the future, I may feel differently by then. I may want to forge on to 75 books. (I’m smiling.)

     If you could offer one piece of advice to a novice writer, what would it be?

     When I decided to write my first book, I bought a writing-romance how-to, because that’s what I was reading at the time. I devoured that book from beginning to end, then started writing in my spare time. Over the years, I attended conferences and writing workshops, hoping to learn something new. It was beat into my head that it was imperative to write an outline, character sketches, and a synopsis. That stalled me, and it stressed me out like crazy, but I felt compelled to do what I’d been taught.

     I sold a novella to Harlequin, and I wrote four books, three of which were RWA Golden Heart Finalists, but still, they languished under the weight of rejection letters that basically said “too much mystery, not enough romance.” Eventually, it hit me that I should write a mystery, so I did. I finished Dressed to Die, but it wasn’t polished. One day in 2012, I came to the realization that the outline-sketches-synopsis method didn’t work for me. Keeping that in mind, I looked at Dressed with new eyes and it came together perfectly. Thirty-one books later, I’m happy with the path I chose, which included switching to the route of indie author, rather than traditional publishing again.

 
My advice to novice authors is this: Not everyone is cut out to follow the established writing path of plotting the whole book ahead of time. Some people are born to be pantsters, or writers who plot as they go. If you’re not sure which you are, try it both ways and see what works for you. Another thing, don’t be afraid to approach experts when you research. No matter how famous they may be, you have a 50/50 chance they’ll speak to you. (Be sure to thank them in your Author Note.) Also, give serious consideration to whether or not you want to publish with a traditional publisher or go the indie route. Either way, you have your work cut out for you, which brings me to my last word of advice. Don’t go into writing thinking you’re going to hit the best-seller lists and make a fortune. That happens infrequently. However, if it does happen to you, congratulations!

     What would you consider to be the best compliment a reader could give your book?

     Let me cite a couple of examples of what readers have said that warmed my heart and made me chuckle. One comes from a review written about Here and Gone (Fossil, Colorado Books #1). She said, “Loved Here and Gone, couldn’t hardly put it down, but my animals and husband needed to eat.” Another came to me via email about Taken to Die (Grace Gabbiano Mysteries, book 5): “I swear, you had me believing in extraterrestrials in Taken to Die.”

     When someone says they couldn’t put down one of my books, or that I drew them thoroughly into the story, I take it as high praise, indeed.

     What are you working on now?

     My current work-in-progress is The Wrong Wicca (Andi Comstock Supernatural Mysteries, Book 5). This series was inspired by a real-life event I had on my last job. I smelled smoke in the building, but no one else did. A year or so after I left that job, it came to me how I could use that experience in a book and the Andi series was born. Suffice it to say, that building was on the opposite corner from a crematorium.

     Wicca deviates from Andi talking to the cremated dead (Smokies) when a murdered woman asks for help to find her body. Andi’s cohorts in crime-fighting are her new husband, Jack Harmon, a homicide detective, and Father Riley O’Shaughnessy, the priest at the Catholic Church down the street from where Andi works. In Wicca, there’s also a magic trunk that contains a huge clue to Cassie’s killer, if only Andi can figure it out.
