TWO ONTARIO AUTHORS ARE WINNERS IN INTERNATIONAL WRITERS CONTEST

TWO ONTARIO AUTHORS ARE WINNERS IN

INTERNATIONAL WRITERS CONTEST

Ontario authors Spencer Sekulin and J.R. Johnson are winners in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest earning them both a trip to Hollywood, a week-long master-class workshop, and their winning stories published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 39

Why should you order and read

L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 39?

Because...

· These stories will bring you into fresh new worlds and new ideas.

· Some of your favorite authors chose them.

· Reading the stories will teach you what it takes to win the contest.

· Artists of the future illustrate the stories.

· You need to know what happens when death and taxes come together in the form of one IRS agent who faces the darkest audit of all. (Find out in one of the stories in the volume....)

The Contest, one of the most prestigious writing and illustrating competitions in the world, is currently in its 40th year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction.

The Writers of the Future Contest judges include, Tim Powers (author of On Stranger Tides), Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert (Dune prequel series), Robert J. Sawyer (Quantum Night), Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn series, The Stormlight Archive), Larry Niven (Ringworld), Orson Scott Card (Ender’s Game), Nnedi Okorafor (Who Fears Death),  and Katherine Kurtz (Deryni series) to name a few.

The Illustrators of the Future Contest judges include, Bob Eggleton (11 Chesley Awards and 7 Hugo Awards), Larry Elmore (Dungeons & Dragons book covers), Echo Chernik (graphic designs for major corporations including Celestial Seasonings tea packaging), Rob Prior (art for Spawn, Heavy Metal comics and Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Ciruelo (Eragon Coloring Book).

Following the 1982 release of his internationally acclaimed bestselling science fiction novel, Battlefield Earth, written in celebration of 50 years as a professional writer, L. Ron Hubbard created the Writers of the Future (
writersofthefuture.com) in 1983 to provide a means for aspiring writers of speculative fiction to get that much-needed break. Due to the success of the Writers of the Future Contest, the companion Illustrators of the Future Contest was inaugurated five years later.

The 547 past winners and published finalists of the Writing Contest have published over 2,000 novels and nearly 6,300 short stories. They have produced 36 New York Times bestsellers, and their works have sold over 60 million copies.

The intensive mentoring process has proven very successful. The 382 past winners of the Illustrating Contest have produced over 6,000 illustrations, 360 comic books, graced 624 books and albums with their art and visually contributed to 68 TV shows, and 40 major movies.

The Writers and Illustrators of the Future Award is the genre’s most prestigious award of its kind and has now become the largest, most successful and demonstrably most influential vehicle for budding creative talent in the world of contemporary fiction.

Since inception, the Writers and Illustrators of the Future contests have produced 39 anthology volumes and awarded over $1,000,000 cumulatively in prize moneys and royalties.

About The Winners!

When Spencer Sekulin isn’t on the road as a paramedic or studying medicine, he is most likely writing. Born and raised in Ontario, Canada, Spencer fell in love with books at a young age, with authors like Terry Brooks and Eoin Colfer giving him an appetite for speculative fiction. Though he didn’t begin writing until university, he quickly discovered that it was just as fun as reading—and the rest is history. His passions include emergency medicine, homemade coffee, travel obscura, and of course, writing.

J.R. Johnson finds speculative fiction appealing because she likes the idea that there is more to the world than meets the eye, and that the human race has a future. She grew up in the folded Appalachian hills, where she learned to love Fall, blueberries straight from the bush, and the stream beneath the willows near her house. The fact that Fall is inevitably followed by Winter, that picking berries means crossing paths with bears, and that the stream was laced with dioxins may also have had some impact on her outlook. She now lives and writes in Ottawa, Ontario.

Award-winning writer Edward Willett crowdfunding fourth anthology featuring major science fiction and fantasy authors

Award-winning writer Edward Willett crowdfunding fourth anthology

featuring major science fiction and fantasy authors

Edward Willett, Saskatchewan-based award-winning author of more than sixty books of science fiction, fantasy, and non-fiction for readers of all ages, is launching a Kickstarter campaign on March 14, 2023, to fund the fourth annual anthology featuring some of the top writers of science fiction and fantasy working today, all of whom were guests on his Aurora Award-winning podcast, The Worldshapers (www.theworldshapers.com).

Shapers of Worlds Volume IV will feature new fiction from David Boop, Michaelbrent Collings, Roy M. Griffis, Sarah A. Hoyt, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Noah Lemelson, Mark Leslie Lefebvre, Edward M. Lerner, David Liss, Gail Z. Martin, Joshua Palmatier, Richard Paolinelli, Jean-Louis Trudel, James van Pelt, Garon Whited, and Edward Willett, plus reprints by James Kennedy, R.S. Mellette, and Lavie Tidhar. Among those authors are several international bestsellers, as well as winners and nominees for every major science fiction and fantasy literary award.

All of the authors were guests during the fourth year of The Worldshapers, where Willett interviews other science fiction and fantasy authors about their creative process.

Backers' rewards offered by the authors include numerous e-books, signed paperback and hardcover books, Tuckerizations (a backer’s name used as a character name), commissioned artwork, one-on-one writing/publishing consultations, audiobooks, opportunities for online chats with authors, short-story critiques, and more.

The Kickstarter campaign can be found at  kickstarter.com/projects/edwardwillett/shapers-of-worlds-volume-iv/.

The campaign goal is $12,000 CDN. Most of those funds will go to pay the authors, with the rest going to reward fulfillment, primarily the editing, layout, and printing of the book, which will be published this fall in both ebook and trade paperback formats by Willett’s publishing company, Shadowpaw Press (www.shadowpawpress.com). This year, there’s a special stretch goal: once the campaign reaches $17,000, $5,000 over the goal, the anthology will be illustrated, with a new black-and-white drawing for each story from Calgary, Alberta artist Wendi Nordell, who has illustrated numerous books for regional publishers including Edward Willett’s science-fiction and fantasy poetry collection, I Tumble Through the Diamond Dust.

The Worldshapers podcast continues, and assuming Shapers of Worlds Volume IV funds this year, there’ll be a campaign to fund the fifth volume in the series next year.

Backwater Mystic Blues, a collection of literary essays by Lloyd Ratzlaff published by Shadowpaw Press

Backwater Mystic Blues, the second acclaimed collection of literary essays by noted Saskatchewan author Lloyd Ratzlaff, out in new editions from Shadowpaw Press

Backwater Mystic Blues, the second acclaimed collection of essays reflecting on nature, spirituality, and growing up on the prairies by noted Saskatchewan author Lloyd Ratzlaff, now has a new home with Shadowpaw Press Reprise, which publishes new editions of notable, previously published work. Shadowpaw Press also recently republished Ratzlaff’s first collection of essays, The Crow Who Tampered With Time.

“Many thanks to Shadowpaw Press for publishing new editions of Backwater Mystic Blues and The Crow Who Tampered With Time,” Ratzlaff says. “These books first confirmed me as a writer, The Crow a tribute to an urban park which became my sanctuary during a period of loss, and Backwater a tribute to my home village and its countryside. I’m delighted and more than grateful to Shadowpaw for giving them another life and offering them to new circles of readers.”

“As with Lloyd’s previous collection, each essay in Backwater Mystic Blues sparkles, provoking nostalgia, smiles, introspection, and reflection,” says Edward Willett, editor and publisher of Shadowpaw Press. “I’m excited to release this new edition of Backwater Mystic Blues, and I hope it will find many new readers who will enjoy it as much as I did.”

Backwater Mystic Blues can be ordered through most bookstores, online or off. It can also be purchased directly from Shadowpaw Press at https://shadowpawpress.com/product/backwater-mystic-blues/

More about the book

Shortlisted for the Non-Fiction Book Award and Saskatoon Book Award,

2006 Saskatchewan Book Awards

In this second suite of intimate essays, Lloyd Ratzlaff summons the secret hiding spots, makeshift rafts, and uncomplicated childhood joys that lay the foundations for adult philosophy. In tune with the vivid simplicities of the sensuous world and the honour of unassuming people, Ratzlaff explores the disguises shaped by religion, family, and memory as he recreates the discovery and illumination that his past has offered.

Critical praise

Backwater Mystic Blues is an extended aide memoire of . . . everyday objects and gestures, retrieved from memory and made to live again in a phosphorescent prose that ‘restores the world to word’ as he writes and whistles in the dark.” – Myrna Kostash

“The essays sing the blues, touching readers as music does, not through linear development or logical exposition but through scenes that resonate emotionally: past reverberates with present and ordinary stuff is transposed into mystical keys . . .In this second instalment of reflective, irreverent, worshipful essays, Ratzlaff bends our usual angles of vision and sheds light and colour on religious experiences of one kind or another.” – Edna Froese, Journal of Mennonite Studies

“The drag of the mundane and the mixed rapture/terror of the divine both find expression—the mundane made keenly relevant and the divine fully believable and grounded . . . Consider it narrative poetry . . . a series of intimate snapshots . . . and find the soul of a poet and a friend within its pages.” — Martin van Woudenberg, Pacific Rim Review of Books

About the Author

The most recent book by Lloyd Ratzlaff is a third collection of literary nonfiction, Bindy’s Moon (Thistledown Press). A.M Westerling featured in Hugs, Kisses and Mistletoe Wishes Christmas Romance Collection

Welcome to fellow Canadian and BWL Author, A.M Westerling!

A.M. Westerling, a top selling author for boutique Canadian publisher BWL Publishing, writes historical romance, including Barkerville Beginnings, Book 4 of the popular Canadian Historical Brides Collection issued in honour of Canada’s 150th birthday.

A former chemical engineer, Astrid traded in her calculator, mechanical pencil and spreadsheets for a keyboard, history books and membership in her local RWA chapter. From Vikings to Viscounts, her adventure filled stories span the ages. Sophie’s Choice and Leah’s Surrender, the first two books in her Ladies of Harrington House Regency romance series, were finalists in Long and Short Reviews Book of the Month, with Leah’s Surrender winning that honor for May 2021.

She enjoys walks in the great outdoors, spending time in her garden and camping. This avid sports fan loves watching NFL (ballet on the grid iron!)  and NASCAR (hot cars, cute drivers!), and cheering on her hometown teams, the Calgary Flames and Calgary Stampeders. A.M. Westerling Books - BookBub

Tell us about your life outside of writing.

I’m a retired chemical engineer and don’t miss my profession at all. As a matter of fact, I often wonder how I ever had time to work! I spend a few days a week at my keyboard with writing and writing related activities. Unless I have a deadline, I work at my own pace. I have a husband and two wonderful sons, both married to smart, beautiful women. We recently became grandparents for the first time and oh my, if I had known how much fun it was going to be, I would have been pestering my kids for years!

I love being outside and go for a walk every morning. I love my garden and the Canadian climate is perfect for me – I’m all gung ho in April and May when I’m anxious to get dirt under my fingernails but by the time September rolls around, I’m ready to put everything away for the winter. I adore camping (see above comment re: love being outside!). Don’t get me wrong, 5 star resort hotels are lovely too. But nothing beats sitting outside in the morning with a coffee staring into the forest with the smell of bacon sizzling on the camp stove, or sitting by the fire at night and gazing up at the stars.

I’m also a big sports fan. To me, pro sports is real reality TV. We have seasons tickets for the Calgary Stampeders and of course follow the Calgary Flames as well. I also love watching NFL on Sundays and NASCAR. I have to blame that one on my husband – a number of years ago he suggested that we attend a NASCAR race in Las Vegas and I’ve been hooked ever since. There’s nothing like the sound of 900 hp engines racing and oh my, you have no idea how fast they go unless you see it in person. Love it. Oh, then there’s golf, and curling, and - You get the picture. *wink*

Do you have a work in progress?

Not officially although I do have a half-written Viking romance set in L’Anse aux Meadows (Newfoundland). I have another book coming out in December with BWL Publishing, Catherine’s Passion, Book 3 of my Ladies of Harrington House Regency romance series.

I’m taking a bit of a breather at the moment to focus on marketing the Christmas anthology I’m involved with, Hugs, Kisses and Mistletoe Wishes. After that, I’m not sure whether I’ll finish the Viking one or tackle something brand new. I have a folder of story ideas so I might just see what I can find in there.

What was the most difficult section/piece you ever wrote? What made it difficult?

I have to say it was my Viking romance A Heart Enslaved. My heroine Gisela is a Christian and my hero Thorvald believes in the Norse gods. It’s a source of conflict for them, particularly Gisela. It was difficult to navigate equitably between the two belief systems as I didn’t want to make one belief system better than the other. Also, it was the first Viking era story I wrote so it required a lot of research.

Conversely, Evelyn’s Beau, a novella set in the Regency era and which is my contribution to the Hugs, Kisses and Mistletoe Wishes Christmas anthology, was the easiest book I’ve written so far. It’s a sweet romance and the story centres on a Christmas pageant performed by disadvantaged children which ends in disaster. Because it’s novella length, I didn’t need to weave in many subplots which is usually where my research comes in. I only had to ensure that the language, clothing, food, modes of transportation, etc., were appropriate for the era.

What sort of research do you do for your work?

Haha, well I write historical romance so I do a ton of research. That suits me perfectly as I find the facts I learn always give me story ideas. For example, I learned Vikings could buy their innocence which is the premise behind A Heart Enslaved. I’ve been building up my own library of history books but of course I rely heavily on the internet aka the time suck. I stay away from Wikipedia.

Which books and authors do you read for pleasure? Is there an author who inspires you?

Not really although I was a huge fan of Kathleen Woodiwiss, Rosemary Rogers, Marsha Canham and Johanna Lindsay back in the day. I pretty much stick to historical romance although I will throw in the occasional contemporary romance. Right now I am discovering other BWL Publishing authors such as Victoria Chatham, Rosemary Morris, Tricia McGill and Juliet Waldron. I prefer romance as I read for entertainment and the last thing I want is a depressing book. I like a happily ever after!

Was there a person who encouraged you to write?

No. I started to write because it got to the point that the market was so saturated with historical romances, they were ahem, mostly terrible. I thought I could do better so I actually started my first book (it’s not published, it’s my so called book under my bed) during lunch hours when I was still working. My family of course is very supportive of my endeavours.
