The Many Faces of Gilda

When I first created the Gilda Wright Mystery series, I was actually the receptionist in a small martial arts school in Ontario. I was thrilled when my late agent, Dawn Dowdle, helped secure me a contract with Gemma Halliday Publishing. At that time, the series had a whole different name and we started out with this great cover - one I still love - and a title which suited the book!

Unfortunately, the series didn't attract the attention GHP was hoping so when the second book came out, they gave the whole series a makeover. Enter Gilda's Brunette phase. Definitely looks like a cozy mystery series. I probably would've liked them better if they weren't bright pink. Just me.

In March 2018, GHP decided the books weren't selling to their satisfaction and released them back to me. Since I already had my Wild Blue Mystery series with BWL Publishing, I offered the series to them. If they declined, the series would become my first foray into self-publishing. Lucky for me, BWL took them on and Gilda and the gang received new titles and new covers.

Gilda Wright thinks she’s landed a dream job as the receptionist at a karate school except she’s surrounded by handsome instructors, a local bookie, and more mysteries than she’d counted on.

As I mentioned earlier, I used to be the receptionist at a local martial arts school, so stepping in to write a martial arts mystery series just came naturally. Egos get bruised just as easily as shins and thighs. I transformed the dojo into a school where many people might be afraid to set foot in and let Gilda Wright take over to solve crimes in Sandstone Cove.

Gilda took the job at Yoshida Martial Arts to mend a broken heart and find her own inner strength after a bad breakup. It was less painful for her than Detective Jason Thayer who ended up head first in a fifty-pound bag of coffee beans. That was three years ago. Now that Gilda’s a blue belt heading for a brown belt grading (Sh! If you’ve already read Dead Without Pride, don’t give away how that turns out!), Thayer’s afraid to set foot in the school – or her house.

Lucky for Gilda, she has Sensei Mick on her side. As well as Marion Yearly, her best friend, and Kane Garrick…Gilda’s not sure what he is yet.

Here's the blurb for each book and their current covers!

Book 1 - Dead Without Honor

The scroll of the Four Possessions of the Samurai holds the key to a deadly mystery…

Gilda Wright thinks she’s landed a dream job as the receptionist at a karate school. Her boss, Sensei Mick Williams, is almost as demanding as he is sexy, but Gilda is inspired by the strength and courage of the people around her. When Gilda finds the body of one of the instructors in the dojo with a sword through his chest, she must find her own inner strength and fast! The police regard everyone in the school as suspects, including her boss, and it’s up to Gilda to find out what really happened. She follows the clues of the missing scroll of the Four Possessions of the Samurai down a deadly path filled with lies, deceit, and poisoned ninja stars. If she doesn’t watch her back, she just may become the killer’s next target.

Book 2 – Dead Without Glory

One body on the beach.

One crazy man with a sword accused.

One feisty receptionist on the case.

Gilda Wright’s life seems to finally be on track. Her love life is looking up and she’s planning and promoting a grand opening extravaganza for Sensei Mick Williams’ new martial arts school. But things go awry when their special guest referee for the opening exhibition match is found dead on the beach. To make matters worse, the school’s new weapon’s instructor Kane Garrick, who is enough to make any woman lose her head and her heart, stands accused of his murder. In spite of her promise to Mick and nearly everyone else in Sandstone Cove not to get involved, Gilda wades into danger one more time. The only question is, can Gilda catch the killer before the killer catches up to her?

Book 3 – Dead Without Pride

Gilda Wright has always had an open mind about the spiritual world. Dating the hot sensei at her martial arts school, Mick Williams, has taught her that mind, body, and spirit have a strong connection. But when her good friend and sometimes flirtation, Kane Garrick hires a pretty psychic at his New Age store, Gilda finds herself torn between being glad he's distracted and feeling just the teeny-tiniest bit jealous. A feeling that quickly turns to suspicion when the psychic's predictions begin to come true—including one about the murder of a well-known person in their small town! Suddenly Gilda wonders if the psychic's involvement in both her predictions and Kane's life are mere coincidence or a clever set up. It's up to Gilda to find the truth and track down a killer...before her own death becomes next on the psychic's prediction list!

Book 4 – Dead Without Shame

Once more, Gilda considers leaving the karate school to work for her friend Happy (no one has ever called him Harvey). When three men rob Happy Harvey’s Hangover Hut killing the woman at the front counter, Gilda is stunned to think that could have been her. Was this a mere robbery, or does someone have a vendetta against Happy, including his good friend Gary del Garda? The evidence keeps piling up while both her mother and another karate instructor come to town bearing secrets that may cost Gilda the life she loves in Sandstone Cove.

Book 5 – Dead Without Remorse

The fifth Gilda Wright Mystery arrived in August 2021 even though Book 5 was technically Book 2.5 - a bridge between Books 2 & 3 – and finally answered the mystery of how Mick lost his hearing.

Someone has destroyed the building that housed the former Yoshida Martial Arts School leaving numerous people injured and one dead. Considering Sensei Mick Williams owns the building, Gilda Wright needs to clear his name, plus track a killer before her suspects scatter like debris.

Book 6 – Dead Without Malice (June 2024 No Cover Art Yet!)

A family wedding is the last thing on Gilda Wright’s mind as she prepares to grade for her Black Belt. That is until one of the men in her life turns up dead after a post-karate training dinner and Gilda has a breakdown. Just when she thinks things can’t get any worse, her good friend Kane Garrick disappears. Can she straighten everything out before the wedding and her grading, or will she pack up and leave Sandstone Cove behind for once and for all?

July 2023 Round Robin Blog Fest - Character Arcs

So I've had a crazy couple of months with moving across Canada and getting settled back in Alberta after living in Ontario for nearly 20 years. I'm slowly getting back to the business of writing and working even more closely with my publisher of 10 years, BWL Publishing! It's fun to see all the hard work I've done come back and all tie together. Speaking of tying things together, this is our topic of the month:

How important is Character Arc to your stories and how does it tie into the plot or story arc? Do you usually give some time and story to character arcs for secondary characters?

Since I am elbow deep into writing my next Gilda Wright Mystery, I'm already dealing with exactly those topics. Without giving much away,--mostly because I'm not that far into writing it--I can say that Gilda's Character Arc is going to be huge in this book. It ties directly into the plot for Dead Without Malice because of the inner struggle she is dealing with AND that she now has her mother back in town which will hugely affect her Character Arc!

For those who have not read the series, Gilda Wright joined a karate school after a bad breakup with a boyfriend (who happens to be a local police officer). She also ended up working at the school and having a romance with her boss. Which hasn't worked out the way she'd hoped. Along the way, she's also solved mysteries and gotten into more trouble than she'd ever anticipated. Her last mystery saw her badly beaten and in another one, she was kidnapped with her "fairy godfather", Gary del Garda.

Spoiler alert. Gary doesn't fare well in Dead Without Malice, and Gilda must struggle with grieving the loss of her friend as well as solving his death. Okay, that will be in the blub on the back cover!

As far as my secondary characters, Gilda's friend, Kane Garrick, will undergo his own large Character Arc. He has grown a great deal since his appearance in Dead Without Glory, but has always kept a bit of a shady side hidden from her. It will come back to haunt him in the new book and create a struggle for him as well. Yesterday morning, I wrote out a whole scene where he comes clean about a few things in his past and why he moves around so much.

As per a good friend of mine who has been a karate sensei for many years, this book will contain a lot more karate! Especially since Gilda is gearing up for her Black Belt Grading.

Will she do it in this book or will she walk away from it all and not bother?
I guess we'll have to wait and see!

Happy birthday to ME!! Updates of Things to Come!

Yes, my real, yummy birthday cake!!

I can honestly say this has been a HUGE year for changes with more to come.

There have been a few constants--my Escape With a Writer Blog, my feline companions, my family, and many friends--but a lot of other things have changed and will keep on evolving.

  • I've moved across Canada from Ontario to Alberta, which is more of a homecoming since I was born and raised here.
  • I now have my own business (Escape With a Writer!) and am working closely with my publisher of the past 10 years, BWL Publishing Ltd. Currently, we are setting up a Shopify store - Links to come. And there is big news with the additions of a new author who is a member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame!
  • Oh, and I'll be training with BWL to eventually take over the publishing reins. Lots to learn there.
  • Under the banner of Escape With a Writer, will not only be the blog, but I'm madly plotting a podcast to feature amazing authors and other people who I think are just plain fascinating! I have a lot of learning to do for that yet since I'm busy going down rabbit holes to learn about so many things right now.
  • Heading out to a couple great writing conferences. One is When Words Collide coming soon to Calgary.

AND editing a couple books for good friends.

AND writing a couple books! Dead Without Malice, my next and possibly last Gilda Wright Mystery comes out in June 2024. Jesse James' Gold, a book in the BWL Canadian Historical Mystery Series, comes out in October 2024. Time to start cracking the whip!

A New Release, A Free Book and Happy Birthday to ME!!

Happy Birthday and New Release to ME!

It's my birthday so we're changing things up today with

a little reminsecing about one of my favorite series:

Gilda Wright Mysteries

launching a NEW BOOK and giving away a FREE BOOK!!

Did you know Gilda came about while I was actually working
as a receptionist in a karate school?

While her adventures are much more exciting than mine, I couldn't pass up the opportunity for a fun cast of characters and some kick ass action!

Did you also know those great karate covers weren't the first incarnation for Gilda's mysteries?

When the first book was first released several years ago, it went through a couple different covers. Personally, I loved the cover and title Death of a Jaded Samurai, but the publisher was torn and we changed it to suit their markets.

Then I changed publishers to BWL Publishing Inc. and got that great logo! I love the karate positions on the new covers and have had fun with launching 4 adventures.

Did you know that my goal for each book, is for Gilda to grow into a more confident woman?
It's true! I also love that her bestie Marion Yearly grows along side her and me with them.
Between the two of them, there's never a dull moment!
When you toss Mick Williams, Kane Garrick, and the rest of the gang at Pheonix Martial Arts into the mix, Gilda's days are never boring.
Then there's Happy Harvey's Hangover Hut and the eternal question:  Should Gilda keep working at the Phoenix school or run for cover behind the front counter of the tiki-infested liquor store?

Even though it's MY BIRTHDAY!! I have a  couple great gifts for YOU!

Number One:  A FREE BOOK!!
All YOU have to do is go HERE to pick it up!

Number Two:  A NEW RELEASE!!
DEAD WITHOUT REMORSE
Find out how Mick lost his hearing and what Fabio gave Gilda that could change the course of her future...

If you'd like a taste of what's going on in Gilda's world, keep reading...

Dead Without Remorse

Chapter One

Gilda fanned her face, glad she’d pulled her shoulder-length hair into a ponytail and melted onto a lawn chair. Sweat trickled from every pore as she groaned. “This weather is unbelievable, especially for mid-September.”

“Hey, I’ll take it. Summer could last another six months as far as I’m concerned.” Marion Yearly, her best friend of many years, handed her a tall glass and a straw across the round mosaic-tiled table. “Here, this’ll help. My famous Lemonade Margarita. Drink it slow, it’s loaded with…”

Too thirsty to heed her warning, Gilda sucked back nearly half a glass of the cold, tangy mixture before an odd taste hit the back of her throat. She scrunched up her face. “What’s in this?”

“I tried to warn you about the tequila.” Marion curled her shoulder-length dark hair over her ears before she topped up Gilda’s glass then raised her own. “Cheers to both of us finally getting an afternoon off to hang out together. Well, aside from karate class this morning.”

“Amen.” Gilda tapped her glass against Marion’s before she sat back. Her best idea of the day so far was to pull on a bikini beneath her shorts and tank top after class.

Maybe she could convince Marion to join her for a dip in Lake Erie later. Considering the sweltering heat, it wouldn’t take much effort, especially after some spiked lemonade.

Her best friend’s backyard resembled a small-town version of the Garden of Eden. Fruit trees, a wide variety of flowers, thick shrubs, and plenty of shade. Gilda felt like she’d gone to paradise without having to board a plane.

Marion slid on her sunglasses before she sat back and breathed out a happy sigh. “How’d you manage to get the rest of the day off anyway? I thought Mick wanted you to work all day and night to get ready for Sandstone Cove’s birthday bash next weekend.”

“That’s what he said, but—”

“Aren’t we supposed to be doing some big demo on the beach and distributing some handouts?” she cut Gilda off.

“Yup, but we’ve worked out most of the details and the flyers are at the printers. Besides, I’ve put in well over my usual hours in the past few weeks. I needed a day off before I strangled someone.”

Marion grinned. “Kane. I heard you two snarl at each other in class.”

“He’s had it coming all week. At least, Kane’s teaching classes tonight, so Mick and I can be alone. Between the new school and the celebration, it’s been weeks since we’ve had time together.”

When she’d first started to work for Sensei Mick Williams at Yoshida Martial Arts, she was ill prepared for what lay ahead, or for falling head over heels for her boss. Her original motivation was to hide from the world behind a desk. To rebuild her shattered self-confidence and ego after a very public breakup with a local police detective.

“Did I tell you how jealous I am you work with the hottest hunks in town? You know that’s the only reason I take classes, right?” Marion adjusted the straps of her yellow tank top before she closed her eyes and settled back with a dreamy smile.

Not only did Gilda know. So did the hunks in question. Marion had a massive crush on Razi Mauli, one of the instructors. He seemed to take her attention in stride. Sometimes, he seemed to enjoy it enough to flirt a bit in return.

“That and you like to watch them grapple in tight shorts.”

“I’ll drink to that.” Marion grinned.

Gilda gazed around the garden. “Do you realize it’s been three months already since Mick shut down the Yoshida school?”

Then he and Razi built Phoenix Martial Arts. Despite the glitch of a murdered referee during their grand opening, membership had soared. Gilda shuddered at the memory of stumbling across yet another body. She never wanted that experience again. Ever.
