Setting the Scene, Round Robin Blog November 18, 2023

Live has gone into busy mode once more with the holidays amping up - especially since I now work in retail and since we're in the throes of Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month). I'm happy to be able to join in for the November Round Robin.

This month's topic is:  Setting the Scene. Or as one blogger has suggested: Your scene is a sketch, not a photograph.

I have to say I totally agree with this statement.

Wrapping up NaNoWroMo!!

I didn't share at the beginning of this year's NaNo journey, but I'd like to follow up now!

Yes, for yet another year I took the challenge to write 50,000 words in 30 days. Crazy? Maybe. The great part is, I always seem to get a pretty good book out of the deal. A few have been published such as Drop Dead Cowboy and Dead Man's Doll - yup, both were contest books!

After just over three weeks of writing, I've mostly finished a new Glitter Bay Mystery, All That Shimmers. For those of you following the series, Laken has moved into the apartment above her sister's shop, Vintage Sage, but has what she thinks are critters in her attic.

Wait. She has an attic? Yup!

Just one of many things she finds out starting the day she discovers her ex-husband, B-List actor Emery Samson, lying face down in the courtyard behind Vintage Sage. Following Emery's sudden death, Laken meets the new Chief of Police, Gavin McKelvey, and the new dog groomer who seems to fascinate her boyfriend Cameron Dale. With the help of Gavin, Sage, their good friend Quinn, and Enid--the local gossip columnist--Laken sets out to figure out who murdered her ex-husband to take the heat off her.

So when does the All That Shimmers, book 3 in the Glitter Bay Mystery series, come out? Watch for it in June 2023!

Thanks for joining me for the Escape With a Writer blog!
I hope you'll follow me on Social Media to keep in the loop about upcoming books and find out what other surprises are in store for 2023!

Have a Happy Holiday Season!

Happy Halloween! Free Story by Diane Bator

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

While I'm in the middle of moving to a new home this Halloween, I thought I'd leave a little entertainment for you all! Something I worked on last November for Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month) that will be published one day soon!

This is an excerpt from The Spirited Witch, a YA fantasy that I hope to self-publish in 2022! Please keep in mind, it has not reached the editing phase so it is a bit rough in spots. Enjoy!

The Spirited Witch

Aura trailed her hand along the cream wallpaper patterned with black velvet swirls. The texture comforted her. In fact, she’d already worn a small line in the velvet over the past ten years she’d lived here. It was only a few months now before she was actually an adult. Most kids her age would go to college. Aura would be able to start her training to become a real witch. As far as she was concerned, her birthday couldn’t come fast enough.

Below her, a small crowd of people wearing drab fall colours had gathered in the parlour and wove among the antique furnishings. They seemed intrigued by the way the full moon cast its beams through the lead glass windows and dispersed into small rainbows. She was surprised she hadn’t heard the doorbell earlier or that her aunt was nowhere in sight.

The stair behind her creaked as her aunt’s cat followed her downstairs. While the so-called familiar wasn’t eager to spend time with Aunt Sybillina, she seemed to follow Aura everywhere. Aura was convinced Ash only tagged along to spy on her every move.

“Come on, then.” Aura wiggled her fingers in front of the cat. “I could use some backup. I have no idea where Aunt Sybillina is right now.”

She did a quick head count. Seven people milled around the large round table. As far as she knew, they were expecting six. She’d need to fetch one more chair. All that would take was a quick trip to the kitchen and problem solved.

“Good evening, everyone,” Aura said as she flashed a smile at the four women and three men. “My aunt will join us shortly. Feel free to take a seat at the table. I’ll fetch us one more chair.”

“She can see us?” someone whispered.

Aura rolled her eyes. It wasn’t the first time she’d heard that line. People always thought they were being original. She brought another chair from the kitchen one room over and chatted with their guests as she slid the chairs around to make room for one more.

“I would like to see my daughter again,” one woman said. “I have so much to tell her.”

“I’m sure my aunt will have no trouble contacting her.” Aura nodded.

A tall, gaunt man approached her. “Do you think we shall each get a turn? I have something very important I should like to discuss with my wife.”

“That depends how spirit flows.” Aura shrugged as she pulled out a chair for him.

A trio of elderly women hovered near the divan. They bickered back and forth for several minutes before one of them approached Aura.

“Are you sure so much light is necessary for something like this?” she asked. The wispy feathers in her hat nearly jabbed Aura’s nose as they bounced into her face.

Aura nodded. “Actually, we’re lucky tonight. It’s a Halloween full moon and the veil between the living world and the dead is thin. We should have a lot of excitement tonight.”

One of the other women seemed to glide across the floor like she skated on ice. “Henrietta, I told you. This is when they are the most active. Charlie says this is the perfect time of day to see them clearly.”

Aura chuckled. “They’re not deer, you know. Besides, I will light the candles and turn out the main light once you’re all seated. They love candlelight.”

“That would be so much better.” Henrietta smiled. “See, Babs, there is nothing to worry about.”

“You folks can take a seat now.” Aura chuckled. “My aunt will join us momentarily.”

“Wait.” A man carrying a motorcycle helmet walked straight up to Aura and waved a hand in front of her face. “She can see us now.”

Babs gasped. “Yes, she can. Oh heavens, my dear. How did that happen?”

Aura shrugged them off convinced her aunt was playing a trick on her. It wasn’t funny. She didn’t need to be reminded that she still didn’t have the same magical powers her aunt had. With a sigh, she played along and told them, “I have no idea. I couldn’t yesterday.”

“It is the perfect storm.” The gaunt man walked toward the window but stayed out of the rainbows that dotted the carpet. “Halloween, a full moon, and a blue moon all in one magical night.”

“Okay, stop messing with me now and take a seat so we can get started,” Aura said as Ash rubbed against her leg and nearly bowled her over.

Then the doorbell rang. Soon the house filled with the sounds of more voices as well as her aunt welcoming their guests.

Aura’s stomach clenched as her breath stuck in her throat. What was going on? Her aunt must have double-booked the parlour for two séances. They might have the chairs, but not the table space. Just as she got the seven guests in the parlour seated, six more people began to file into the room with nervous smiles and darting glances. Her aunt strode into the room behind them.

“Aunt Sybillina, what’s going on?” Aura froze as one of the new guests sat right on top of a seated guest. The man’s body went right through the lady with the feather hat as if she wasn’t even there.

Aura’s mouth fell open. “What on earth?”

Aunt Sybillina cleared her throat and sounded irritated. “Aura, please remove that extra seat. We have six guests tonight, not seven.”

Nausea swept over her and her body refused to move. It was as if her feet were nailed to the ground. The seven guests she’d greeted—the spirits—rose off their seats and into the air as they all watched her expectantly. What was she supposed to do?

“Get a move on, girl,” Henrietta clucked. “We don’t have all night.”

Aura lifted the seventh chair and carried it by the back toward the swinging door that led to the kitchen. One of the men stood near the doorway as if holding the door open for her. The door didn’t move until she bumped it with the chair seat.

Once she set the chair at the kitchen table, she paused to catch her breath. “I haven’t been able to see spirits since I was a child. Why is this happening now?”

“It’s Halloween,” someone said. “The veil is thin.”

“I know that. Just as I know that I’m a witch. I just don’t have any powers.” She turned to face them, but no one was there.

On the floor, Ash licked her paws then glanced up with wide green eyes. Her gazed seemed to bore straight into Aura.

“You again.”

“Aura, do hurry up so we can get started.” Her aunt’s raised voice sent a shiver down her back like ice water.

Ash blinked.

With her head bowed, Aura hurried back into the parlour and avoided looking at any of the spirits as she took her seat at the far side of the table across from her aunt. She looked up and met her aunt’s stern gaze then hopped back to her feet to light the candles in the large candelabra in the centre of the table with the long matches her aunt kept in the sideboard cupboard. As she did so, she brushed against one of her aunt’s guests.

This man was solid. Flesh and blood.

Aura glanced to the woman standing behind his chair. Bab’s fawned over him and tried to touch him but her hand went right through his shoulder every time. Aura grew dizzy. What was going on?

“May we begin?” There was a sharp edge in her aunt’s voice.

Aura lit the last candle then slid onto her seat. She flashed a nervous smile at the corporeal bodies at the table. One of the spirits shook his head and tutted then feigned looking at his watch as if he had somewhere else to be. Judging from his clothing, his watch hadn’t worked in at least twenty years.

“Please join hands,” Sybillina announced. “We are here to contact loved ones in the spirit world. Tonight is a Halloween full moon. It is also a blue moon, which means it is the second full moon of the month. We are blessed to have the veil so thin that we can summon the spirits of your loved ones to connect with.”

The spirit with the watch huffed. “Yes, so get on with it already. It is Halloween. We have places to go and people to haunt.”

I hope you enjoyed the blurb!! Watch for the book release in 2022!

Happy Halloween!

New Year Resolutions for 2021

Love 'em or hate 'em there's something to be said for setting goals for a new year. We've all done it. Vowed to lose weight, change jobs, learn new things, be better people, eat healthier, exercise more...blah, blah, blah. What generally ends up happening is that we lose interest in those new ideas by Valentine's Day in favor of chocolate or give up on going to the gym because of the bad weather in January and February. Kudos to those who can follow through where most of us look out the window and decide to forget it. We'll start again after Easter.

Back when I was a karate student years ago, we set three goals for the year.
  • a karate goal
  • a personal goal
  • a fitness goal
We would write them down on a slip of paper the sensei would keep in his office and get them back the next year when we sat down to write our new goals. Sometimes we accomplished them. Sometimes we achieved them but not in ways we expected.

One of the things I've discovered is that my goals are constantly evolving. I may start off the year with the goal to write or publish a certain book, then end up writing or publishing something totally different. If we keep those goals totally rigid, we lose the ability to go with the flow when something better comes along. We may still accomplish them, but on a different timeline.

What are my goals for 2021?
  • finishing edits on All That Shines which will be published in April
  • finishing Dead Without Remorse, a novella that will be published in August
  • a third book that will come out in November... I just haven't decided which it will be!
  • editing my Nanowrimo novel and possibly self-publishing or finding a publisher
  • editing Written in Stone and submitting it as well
  • outlining and preparing a new book to write for Nano 2021
  • adding to this list as new things come up!
My wish for you all in 2021 is that you remain healthy, passionate, and have fun!
I also hope you continue to join us for Escape with a Writer. There are some great things coming this year. I can't wait to introduce you to even more great writers!

Happy 2021!

Diane Bator presents Drop Dead Cowboy and a NaNoWriMo teaser

Today, I'm taking over!!

I'm so grateful to see this blog grow and expand but today I've had to reschedule someone so here I am! I'd love to tell you more about me and what I do as a writer. Here it goes....

Hi everyone, my name is Diane Bator. I am the author of 10 mystery novels and a member of Crime Writers of Canada, Sisters in Crime Toronto, International Thriller Writers, and the Writers Union of Canada. I am proud mom to three grown kids and grateful to be a prolific writer. When I’m not writing, I work in a theatre which may be subject to immortality in a whole new series. No surprise I’ve considered trying my hand at writing a play, right?

What genre do you write?

I used to love reading mysteries and inhaled the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Kathy Reichs, Karin Slaughter, Mary Marks, Lillian Jackson Braun, and so on. Ironically, I never tried my hand at writing one but I didn’t have one specific genre. Then a few years ago I entered a contest to write a mystery novel and won! Just like that, I found my niche.

Thanks to a couple great friends, I’ve also slid into writing fantasy, which isn’t a genre I’ve read much of until lately.

If you could offer once piece of advice to a novice writer, what would it be?

Write the book YOU want to read. I love to create books that speak to me in some way and I hope that they will interest other readers. If you write to the market, it may become work and no longer fun. That’s where something like Nanowrimo comes in! For me, November is playtime with stories.

What are you working on now?

Part of the way I write is that I always have a few irons in the fire. Currently, I’m working on:

All That Shines (Book 2 Glitter Bay Mysteries) coming June 2021

Dead Without Remorse (a Gilda Wright novella) coming August 2021

Written in Stone (an AJ Cadell Mystery – ALL NEW) coming November 2021

As well, I’m planning to self-publish my award winning novella, Murder on Manitou. Watch for that as well!

AND This is where the Nanowrimo part of this comes in!

My newest novel, Drop Dead Cowboy, was written during Nanowrimo 2019. If you’re not familiar, the goal is to write 50,000 words in the month of November, which works out to 1,667 words per day. (You can find out more at https://nanowrimo.org/)

Since many authors find that to be far too many words to deal with, they will set smaller goals for themselves. Personally, I find writing about 1,667 words per day is a great challenge and have “won” the contest twice. Winning just means that you meet YOUR goal!

Do you have to write a complete story? No. You can write poetry, non-fiction, flash fiction, whatever you want to write. The biggest goal is to WRITE!

Aside from my blog, you can find me just about anywhere. I’d love for you to follow me around social media. You never know what I’ll post:

Helen Henderson talks about "Windmaster Legend"

Welcome to this Sunday's featured author Helen Henderson!

Although the author of several local histories, and numerous articles on the topics of American and military history, antiques and collectibles, Henderson’s first love is fiction. Her work in the museum and history fields enables a special insight into creating fantasy worlds. The descendent of a coal-miner's daughter and an aviation flight engineer, her writing reflects the contrasts of her heritage as well as that of her Gemini sign. Her stories cross genres from historical westerns to science fiction and fantasy. In the world of romantic fantasy, she is the author of the Dragshi Chronicles and The Windmaster Novels. In her books, she invites you to join her on travels through the stars, or among fantasy worlds of the imagination.

Tell us about your life outside of writing.
As the years have passed and I’ve aged, non-writing activities have changed. Bicycle riding and antique and air shows gave way to cross-stitch embroidery and crocheting. Somethings, such as caring for home and hearth, haven’t changed. Currently, writing time is sandwiched between caregiving tasks.

Do you have a work in progress?
A novel set in the world of Windmaster that I started during NanoWriMo (also known as the crazy month for authors when we try to write 50,000 words in a span of a month) is demanding to be finished. And a twist on a dragon shifter story is fighting for equal time.

Was there a person who encouraged you to write?
The call to write struck me at an early age. Although teachers tried to encourage me, the structure of school writing assignments interfered with intuitive thinking and chased the muse away. I especially hated outlining. I would write the assignment then reverse engineer the required outline. Of course that meant I often had the work done ahead of time.

I would say several people encouraged me to become a published author. My mother and grandmother because they instilled in me the love of reading. And to me, to be an author you have to be a reader first. On the professional side, I would never have been published or kept going as long as I have without the support and encouragement of romantic suspense writer Carol McPhee and one of my early fiction editors, romance and science fiction author, Judy Griffith Gill.

Five years from now, where do you see yourself as a writer?
Five years seems like an eternity when looking forward, but flashes by in a heartbeat. As to the author me of five years from now? Much depends on the state of the world, the level of caregiving I need to provide, and a myriad of other things. But I would like to have an additional three books under my byline. And with some luck to have at least a couple of the novels from my backlist, at least if my voice holds out, narrated and released as audiobooks.

What are you working on now?
Because of the release earlier this year, in addition to the projects mentioned above, I’ve added guest posts to the blog hops that I’ve been participating in since the first of the year.
Windmaster Legend

A forbidden love. An impossible quest. The accusation of witchcraft. Can love survive?

What history and time may conceal sometimes refuses to stay lost in memory. Windmaster Legend reveals the story behind the legend of the star-crossed lovers, Iol of the House of Cszabo and Pelra of the House of Pirri.

Fate conspired to keep Iol and Pelra apart. Friendship is allowed between members of competing trading houses, but nothing more. He loves the sea and wants his own ship. She hates the deep blue and has worked too hard to allow her dreams to be sidetracked by the lure of magic. Despite a beautiful woman on his arm every night, Leod wanted the one he couldn’t have—Pelra. His kin on the ruling council did more than put him on the fast track to his own ship. It provided him the power to fulfill his desires, or to ruin those who refused him.

Exiled to distant posts, given impossible challenges, and subject to Leod’s machinations, Iol and Pelra only have the hope of a future together to sustain them. But can their love survive the accusation of witchcraft?

Hatchling’s Vengeance

Glyn, former bodyguard and companion to a dragon lord, is now Lady Glynnes Janaleigh, a dragon lord in her own right. And she has found her intended mate. But, finding him is only half the battle. Keeping him alive is the other when duty has other demands and Fate holds all the cards. On one card is written -- A mating flight doesn’t always include the one you want.

The cult leader, the Parant, means to have his vengeance. No matter how long it takes or how many innocents die, he will kill all dragon shifters. Saving your kind—or yourself—requires more than the power of a dragon soul twin when vengeance threatens all. Not even dragon fire and talons are enough to overcome the mind control wielded by the one called—the Parant. Your only hope lies in the fact that vengeance has two paths. One is death—the other is love.
