“Very nicely done!
I was looking forward to reading this one, and it didn't disappoint.
The author sets the pace out early, and things don't slow down much after that!
Atmospheric, claustrophobic and tense, with an underlying sense of threat throughout.
Fans of folk/supernatural horror will have a real treat with this one.
Recommended to anyone afraid of the dark!”

Welcome back to Alex Dunlevy and his upcoming release The Stone Skimmers.

Welcome back to author Alex Dunlevy!

Alex abandoned a career in finance at the age of forty-nine and spent a few years staring at the Mediterranean, contemplating life and loss. Finally, he accepted what his heart had always known. So, he joined a local writing group and he began to write.

He has now completed three novels in a series of crime thrillers set on the island of Crete and featuring British protagonist Nick Fisher. The Unforgiving Stone was the October 2020 debut. Beneath the Stone followed in 2021. Both were awarded B.R.A.G. medallions and rated 4.5 out of 5 by Amazon readers. The Stone Skimmers is the third in this series, released in May 2022.

Alex has also published a collection of short stories, The Late Shift Specialist. These are quite different from his crime writing. Uniquely personal - they are quirky, funny or sad - and written straight from the heart.

He has also been toying with other ideas which will now receive more serious attention. These include a black comedy set in the world of corporate finance and a bitter-sweet coming-of-age story set in the 1960s.

Born in Derbyshire, England, Alex now divides his time between Wiltshire, England and Crete, Greece, where he has an old, stone house in the central south of the island, between the Amari Valley and the Libyan Sea.

Latest Release

I am about to release (May 16) the third novel in my Nick Fisher series. These are intelligent (I hope!) crime thrillers set in and around the island of Crete, Greece, and featuring British protagonist Nick Fisher. The latest one is titled The Stone Skimmers and follows The Unforgiving Stone and Beneath the Stone. It is topical, absorbing and exciting.

Working On Now

After launching The Stone Skimmers, I will be taking a break. Then, I intend to focus on something different for a while: a darkly comic novel set in the world of corporate finance which I will probably call Dead Cat Bounce. There will be more Nick Fishers in due course, I’m sure.

Who Encouraged Me?

There have been four major sources of encouragement. Since I was a teenager, my late brother David encouraged me to write. He was an artist and a songwriter and was keen for me to develop my creative side, even as I insisted on pursuing a career in business. Sadly, he didn’t live to see my books - just some bad poetry! Also, my former partner and long-time friend Stevie Brown was always a burr under my saddle. Every time we met, she would ask me pointedly when I was going to start writing. More recently, it has been the members of the writing group I joined in Wiltshire and my good friend Leonie, a Kiwi who has ambitions herself to be a published writer.

Strengths as an Author

·       Readable and engaging; readers find my books easy to read and hard to put down

·       Good quality prose with few errors

·       Good scene setting

·       Original stories and strong characters

Writing Routine

I try to write most weekdays and to write 1,500 words, however long that takes. On the rare occasions when it takes less than four hours, I carry on until the four hours are up. Once in a while, I might write well over two thousand words in that time. I normally start at ten and write till two or later. A carrot and stick approach works best for me. I live in Crete much of the time, so I can promise myself a trip to the beach once I’ve done my work. I will write at weekends, too, if I get behind. For any book, I have a day-by-day, week-by-week programme through to launch. This isn’t set in “stone” but is only changed with great reluctance and much guilt (even though it’s only for my benefit!) There were four changes to the programme for The Stone Skimmers - it was a tough one...

Five Years Hence

I would like to have extended the Nick Fisher (series of crime thrillers set in Crete) to at least five novels, but I would also like to have written at least two novels in different genres. I have solid ideas for these and have already written 50k words of one of them. One is to be a black comedy set in the world of corporate finance and the other a bitter-sweet, coming-of-age story based around a European tour in 1964. I also enjoy writing short stories, even though they are a tough sell, and would like to release a second collection. If I achieve all this, I will have nine books published, five years from now. In my dreams, one or more of these would have been picked up by a mainstream publisher or spotted by a TV or film producer!

THE UNFORGIVING STONE

Nick Fisher and his son have not spoken for years.

But, when the boy brings the girl he is about to marry to the island of Crete, Nick is persuaded to travel to the remote south-west coast, seeking a reconciliation.

Instead, he discovers that a body has been found on the beach. His son has disappeared and is now prime suspect in a murder case.

In a race against time, ex-cop Nick must call upon his old skills and instincts to find his son, then convince the Greek police of his innocence. To do that, he must seek out other suspects and track down the one who was driven to kill. The one who reached their breaking point.

Only success can save his son. It might even restore Nick’s own self-belief.

BENEATH THE STONE

When Nick Fisher agrees to work with Leo’s feisty, young protégée Náni Samarákis, he doesn’t bargain on facing death or finding love or hurting his son again.

A missing person case morphs into a grisly murder when a body part is found in the sea. But who would carve up the body and why? Were they the killers or was it that mysterious, hooded man, if he even exists? And why does the tracker dog lead them to a stone wall?

In a dark village with a tortured past where resentment festers, Nick and Náni must work together, despite their differences, to peel back layers of complex relationships, some leading back to wartime Crete.

Only then will they find out why a young man had to die.

THE STONE SKIMMERS

When fishermen find the body of a young African off the coast of Crete, local police are stumped. But Bel Saidi, an investigative journalist, thinks it validates her theory: migrant smugglers are using a new route.

Nick Fisher is recruited to an elite team tasked with verifying the route, identifying those involved and bringing them to justice. But, after more tragedy, things become complex and dangerous. They need to grasp the true motives of the shadowy figures operating from Turkey and Albania and the ruthless owners of that powerful motor yacht, ploughing its way across the Mediterranean.

Nick must watch himself with old flame Bel. And he needs to control his anger and sharpen those technology and firearms skills. They might get one chance to bring these guys down. Will intuition, a nose for a scam and good, old-fashioned guts be enough, this time?

THE LATE SHIFT SPECIALIST

A collection of seventeen short stories. These are not crime writing. Uniquely personal, they are funny, sad or quirky but always written straight from the heart.

 What genre do you write?

Crime. The whodunit style.

Do your reading choices reflect your writing choices?

Oh, very much so! I read a lot of Golden Age Detective fiction, primarily Agatha Christie. I also like modern day writers in this area of crime such as Martin Edwards. I’m currently reading a wonderful series by Brian Flynn. I’m also revisiting Margery Allingham’s books which are perfect for dark, cold nights by the fire. I do also read a lot of gothic style novels such as Rhiannon Ward’s The Quickening. I like crime novels that have that cross over between mystery and the supernatural. That really influences my writing. I love evocative settings such as old, crumbling gothic houses. I enjoy creating an atmosphere that immediately has the reader on edge. I do like a sense in a murder mystery that it might not be one of the people we’re seeing but perhaps something else. When I was doing a live FB reading one of the listeners wrote a comment as I was reading that said, ‘It’s a ghost!’ I loved that someone actually thought that the murderer might be something a little more supernatural. I think the setting can conjure up all sorts of different responses almost as if the reader can imagine new ‘characters’ wandering around. I found Abbie Frost’s The Guest House was very evocative and had a really wonderful dark edge to it. I also love to get into a crime series such as Margaret Murphy’s amazing books and D.E. White’s. It really influences how I see the books developing over time and the arc of writing a crime series.

Which type of characters are your favorite to write?

I love writing strong female characters. I like how they interact with each other. There’s a lot of arguing and smart comments between the women in my book. They are a family and I’m not sure strong female characters in a close relationship are always conscious of the need to be ‘nice’ to each other. I think there are a lot more layers to their relationships than that. There is genuine love and affection. Nothing is fake or saccharine about these kind of characters. They don’t feel the need to sugar coat anything. I want the readers to have really genuine characters who are intelligent, funny but, more than anything, people they think are real who they can relate to.

Do pictures, real life or plain imagination create the character you want readers to love?

Very much so. I have a strong image of Ursula, my narrator, and her mother. They’re not drawn from real life pictures but are more my own imagination. I spend a lot of time with these ladies so I can imagine every tiny bit of them now. I think that’s really important to me, to be able to visualize these women walking around in the story. I can see them in each scene I write and I know how they would react to certain events. They’re very real to me.

Do your characters come before or after your plot?

The characters came first. It’s a series so obviously for the sequel, Body on the Island, I already had most of my characters. But with the first book, I had a very strong idea that I wanted them to be a group of women who are at the heart of the books. The plots stem from these people and the kind of situations they might find themselves in.

How do you choose a villain and how do you make them human?

I like to choose the kind of people who can hide in plain sight. Because they are whodunit books I can’t make them obviously the villain but what I like to do is give them the sort of characteristics that when I reveal who the murderer is, the reader can imagine that might be the case. For instance, I might choose someone who has irritating aspects to them that most people find annoying and experience a lot in real life. Then when the killer is named, it’s a big reveal and shocking but there’s definitely that part of the reader that says, ‘Yeah, I can imagine that kind of person killing someone!’

BODY ON THE ISLAND

An uninhabited island.

Ten stranded strangers.

No way to escape.

Ursula Smart (not her real name), realising therapy alone cannot teach her how to survive this life, is determined to make some changes. She signs herself up for a survival course — along with her mother, aunts Charlotte and Mirabelle and Bridget.

But the promised gentle weekend of foraging and camping in the Outer Hebrides swiftly turns into a desperate battle for survival.

Their boat capsizes. Washed up on an uninhabited island, the Smart women face starvation, freezing conditions and — worse — no Wi-Fi.

Then the murders begin.

Someone is killing them off one by one. Will the Smarts escape or will they be next?

A Darkly Comic Golden Age Murder Mystery

Victoria Dowd’s brilliant whodunnit is perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, Anthony Horowitz, Faith Martin and Stuart Turton.

THE SMART WOMAN’S GUIDE TO MURDER

A faded country house in the middle of nowhere.

The guests are snowed in.

The murders begin.

Withering and waspish, Ursula Smart (not her real name) gate-crashes her mother’s book club at an isolated country house for a long weekend retreat. Much to Mother’s chagrin. Joining them are Mother’s best friend, Mirabelle, Aunts Charlotte and Less, and Bridget with her dog Mr Bojangles. It doesn’t matter that they’ve read Gone Girl three times this year already, this retreat is their chance to escape bustling suburbia. But someone has other ideas.

A body is found in the grounds.

Is a lone killer hunting them? Or has one of their own group embarked on a killing spree?

What they need is to stop sniping at each other long enough to solve the mystery before the killer strikes again.

What they need is a guide to survive.

Penelope Cress tells us about Holy Homicide and Divine Death

Welcome to Penelope Cress, author of the Reverend Jessamy Ward Mystery Series!

Penelope Cress lives on an island off the coast of Kent, England, with her four children and an elderly Jack Russell Terrier. A lover of murder mystery and cups of tea (served with a stack of digestive biscuits), she writes quaint cosy mysteries and other feel-good stories from a corner table in the vintage tea shop on the high street. Penelope loves nostalgia and all things retro. Her taste in music is also very last century.

What would you say are your strengths as an author?

When I was younger, I trained to be an actress. I learnt about various methods for getting into a role and I think that helps with my writing. Readers say that they love my characters, even the setting is a character. I see them in my mind like a movie. I spend most of my prep time on the characters - their quirks, their motivations. And then let them loose. They live their story. I just take notes.

How often do you write, and do you write using a strict routine?

I try to write every day. I find that when I leave it for a few days, those days become weeks and often months and then it becomes a terrifying prospect to return to. Once I start again, I wonder what the issue was as I love writing! I am part of a writers’ group than runs online sprints three times a day across all time zones and I aim to join at least one of them each day. Most days I manage two online sprints and edit etc. outside of those times. I am always trying to be more disciplined because when I am I get better results.

Five years from now, where do you see yourself as a writer?

In five years, I want to be able to give up the day job and be more mobile, earning enough from my books to travel and write as I go.

If you could offer once piece of advice to a novice writer, what would it be?

Get out of your own way! I spent years writing my first book. The whole Wesberrey series was heavily inspired by my mother. I wanted to publish it so, hopefully, I could start to earn enough money to reduce my day job hours and spend more time with her as she was not well. I wasted so much time. Even when I had the first book finished, I didn’t show her. I wanted it to be perfect. Sadly, she took very ill suddenly and died ten days later. I eventually published on what would have been her 80th birthday six months later. I didn’t earn enough money to give up the day job, but the worse bit is that my mother never got to see my work in print. As they say, time waits for no man. It will never be perfect – just do it!

What would you consider to be the best compliment a reader could give your book?

I didn’t want it to end.

What are you working on now?

I am increasing my workload as I am writing two books. The fifth book in the Wesberrey series, Consecrated Crime is underway, and I have outlined a second series and have begun to plot the first book. I am also working on a short story for an upcoming anthology.

HOLY HOMICIDE

Despite her cat allergy and her mother’s warnings of doom and disaster, Reverend Jessamy Ward is excited to return to the Isle of Wesberrey to take up her promotion as parish priest of St. Bridget’s Abbey.

Tourists know Wesberrey is famous for three things: there are no cars, there are lots of cats, and there is a legendary fertility well. Shortly after Jess’s arrival, it will be famous for something else - murder!

Can Jess root out the killer or will the unearthing of her own family’s mystical pagan history threaten to destroy her new life?

Holy Homicide is the first book in the exciting new Reverend Jessamy Ward Mystery Series by Penelope Cress.

Escape to a new mystery. Buy Holy Homicide to explore the often quirky and sometimes seedy secrets on the Isle of Wesberrey today!

DIVINE DEATH

Things appear to be settling down in the island parish of St. Bridget's, and Rev Jess Ward is enjoying the relative peace in the lead up to Pentecost. So, maybe it's unwise to invite in the local archaeological society to dig up the old well?

What will the dig beneath the floor of the baptismal font uncover?

Spring is a time of fresh starts and new beginnings. Is that romance we smell in the air?

Life is skipping along until a sudden death takes the spring out of Jess’s step.

Old rivalries, deception and ambition are all viable motives for violence, but could it be a crime of passion, or even self-defence?

In a mystery that appears to involve some of her closest family and friends, Jess turns to her ancient past to help solve this latest tragedy.

Divine Death is the fourth book in the Isle of Wesberrey Series.

June Storer tells us about Hotter Than Coffee and You Can Have Your Cake and Eat It

Welcome to author June Storer!

June Storer is an Author of Romance and Fantasy books and I was born in Birmingham in the United Kingdom and still live locally. Like most people, my life has had its ups and downs and I have learnt many valuable lessons on my journey. I previously worked for the National Health Service for 26 years, in varying roles ranging from Nursing to Administration. It was from here that I started to notice the rich diversity of society, there were so many interesting characters and so many unbelievable situations which I had found myself in and I soon realised that truth was definitely stranger than fiction. It was then that I started to write and I have not stopped since. I am also a qualified Reiki Practitioner. My interests include reading of course, movies, rock music, yoga, spiritualism and I also film and take part in paranormal investigations. My little rescue dog also keeps me fit and active on our daily walks out into the breathtaking scenery in the UK.

What is your latest release?

My latest release is "Hotter Than Coffee" which is a contemporary romance story. Pippa the Protagonist, has a disability which she acquired as a child but hasn't let it stop her from living a normal life. Unfortunately, she has been on the receiving end of disparaging comments and behaviour from other people, and as much as she has tried to ignore what has happened previously, it has left a residue upon her. I decided to write about a character who had a disability because a family member of mine became disabled from an accident and I saw first hand how it affected them and us as a family. I remember an incident when they were discriminated against and I stepped in to educate the person who did it. In this story I tried to emphasise about the difficulties which we all face in life and tried to express how sometimes these problems can add extra stress to someone who might be struggling, but also trying to emphasise how with determination and tenacity most things in life are possible.

What are you working on now?

I am currently working on my new book which features some romance but has more of a fantasy storyline, involving witchcraft, magic and otherworldly themes. It has been really satisfying to allow my vivid imagination to take flight and start writing down all the crazy ideas which I usually have on a daily basis.

Was there a person who encouraged you to write?

After spending most of my life with my head stuck in a book and always working out the endings to films etc, my family repeatedly encouraged me to put pen to paper and start writing my own stories. I also took inspiration from Angela Marsons who is a local Author, based near to where I live in the United Kingdom. She was unfortunately made redundant from her job and had been trying to get her work published for a while without any success. Eventually her perseverance paid off and she is now an international bestselling Author. Her amazing story also encouraged me to write and I am so glad that I did.

What would you say are your strengths as an author?

Having led a colourful life, my main strengths as a writer come from my life experiences and I know that the younger me would not have been able to write from the heart like I do now. Like most of us, I have lived through ups and downs in life and have come out the otherside as a wiser and more empathetic person. I also have an active imagination, which enables me to think up ideas and subject matter to write about.

How often do you write, and do you write using a strict routine?

I try to write everyday, sometimes it may only be a few lines or it could be a few paragraphs. Scattered all around my home, are blank notepads and pens, so that I can jot down any ideas or sentences which suddenly ping up in my mind. I tend to wake up in the morning with my head brimming over with ideas and if I don't scribble them down straight away, by lunchtime they are nothing more than a distant memory, of which I can't recall. When I was previously working full time during the day, I used to only be able to write during the evening and this has now become a normal routine for me, but if I am going out in the evening, I ensure that I do write during the daytime instead.

Five years from now, where do you see yourself as a writer?

In five years time, I would like to be an established writer and have written and published many more books. I am also experimenting with poetry and writing stories in other genres at the moment, so maybe some of my future books might be completely different from what I write now, but that is what I love about being a writer, the possibilities are endless.
