Robert J. Sawyer releases The Oppenheimer Alternative

The Oppenheimer Alternative

The Secret History of The Manhattan Project

Bestselling futurist ROBERT J. SAWYER has been called “Canada’s answer to Michael Crichton” by The Toronto Star and “a writer of boundless confidence and bold scientific extrapolation” by The New York Times.

Now he turns his keen eye back on the past in this, the 80th-anniversary year of the beginning of The Manhattan Project. Sawyer’s 24th novel, THE OPPENHEIMER ALTERNATIVE, tells the secret history of the physicists behind that desperate effort to create the world’s first atomic bomb.

As J. Robert Oppenheimer, scientific director of The Manhattan Project, famously observed after the first A-bomb exploded, “Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds.” And, in our reality, that remains his legacy.

But in the “What if?” vein of Philip K. Dick’s The Man in the High Castle, Sawyer’s novel THE OPPENHEIMER ALTERNATIVE veers cleverly into alternate-history territory. In it, Oppenheimer and his colleagues — including Edward Teller (the inspiration for Dr. Strangelove), flamboyant Richard Feynman, Leo Szilard, Kurt Gödel, and Enrico Fermi — join forces with Albert Einstein, ex-Nazi rocketeer Wernher von Braun and computing pioneer John von Neumann to try to save our planet from impending ecological doom. If they succeed, they’ll be able to declare, “Now we have become Life, the saviors of our world.”

“Every single person in my novel was both real and famous,” says Sawyer. “I spent two years full-time researching this book to make sure I got the characterizations exactly right.”

And do the experts agree? Yes!

Martin Sherwin, co-author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer (the basis for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming biopic Oppenheimer), declares Sawyer’s novel is “an imaginative restructuring of a phantasmagoric life into an alternative phantasmagorical story. Oppenheimer fans will be intrigued.”

Gregory Benford, physicist at UC Irvine, says: “The feel and detail of the Manhattan Project figures is deep and well done. I knew many of these physicists, and Sawyer nails them accurately.”

Perimeter Institute physicist Lee Smolin, the author of The Trouble with Physics, agrees: “I know the history of this period well and I’m one or two degrees of separation from many of these people. Sawyer’s portrayals ring true to me. I loved it!”

And Doug Beason, former Associate Laboratory Director, Los Alamos National Laboratory, adds that “THE OPPENHEIMER ALTERNATIVE is incredibly realistic: the characters, locations, the era, and even the science. I felt like I was back in Los Alamos — and I should know: I worked there!”

“The trick of this novel,” says Sawyer, “was to never contradict known fact. There’s nothing in the book that’s anachronistic or might not have actually happened. This is as much a secret history as an alternate history. So far as everything that’s been made public is concerned, including the most recently declassified documents, what I’m describing really could have happened.”

Indeed, Oppenheimer himself suggested there was a secret history to it all. When he lost his security clearance because of his Communist ties, Oppie really did declare:

“There is a story behind my story. If a reporter digs deep enough he will find that it is a bigger story than my suspension.”

Deak Parsons, Oppie’s second-in-command at the Manhattan Project’s Los Alamos Lab, concurred. He told colleagues, in reference to Oppie being cut off from classified information, that even President Eisenhower was in the dark about the truth:

“I have to put a stop to it. Ike has to know what’s really going on. This is the biggest mistake the United States could make!”

(Sadly, Parsons died the next day of a heart attack before speaking to the president.)

Even Freeman Dyson, Oppie’s great colleague after the war at the Institute for Advance Study in Princeton, felt Oppie was hiding something:

“As a direct result of Oppenheimer’s work, we now know that black holes have played and are playing a decisive part in the evolution of the universe. He lived for twenty-seven years after the discovery, never spoke about it, and never came back to work on it.

“Several times, I asked him why he did not come back to it. He never answered my question, but always changed the conversation to some other subject.”

What was Oppenheimer hiding? The answers are in Sawyer’s fast-paced, character-rich novel. The great alternate-history writer S.M. Stirling says:

THE OPPENHEIMER ALTERNATIVE is a truly science fictional work of alternate history which turns on the decisions — and discoveries — of the great physicists who wrote the history of the 20th century: Einstein, Fermi, Gödel, and Oppenheimer. They are the vividly realized, all-too-human characters who people this novel, and give its brilliant speculations human life and blood. Bravo!”

Based on the latest research and recently declassified documents, Sawyer will enthrall your audience with stunning revelations about the dawn of the atomic age:

Following Hitler’s suicide, many Manhattan Project scientists did not want to continue work on the atomic bomb. Their initial fear had been that the Nazis would get it before the Allies did, and, once the war in Europe was over, they saw no reason to continue.

The Japanese had been making overtures to surrender through diplomatic back channels for over a year before the US dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Had their one demand been accepted, the war in Japan would have ended in 1944.

Harry S. Truman shocked the hell out of Winston Churchill by deviating from their agreed script and demanding “unconditional” surrender from Japan in a live radio broadcast. Churchill only subsequently backed that demand so as not to be seen as contradicting the American leader.

In the end, despite the posturing about “unconditional” surrender, the Allies gave the Japanese the one and only thing they’d wanted a year earlier, namely letting their divine emperor Hirohito retain his throne (which he did until his death in 1989).

Leo Szilard, who got Einstein to write to FDR urging the creation of an atomic weapon, circulated a petition calling for a demonstration of the bomb for Japanese experts, rather than its use on Japanese cities. Oppenheimer’s boss, General Leslie Groves, had the petition branded “Top Secret” and hidden away — so that the bomb could be tested on an actual city, establishing a post-war order with America as the only superpower.

As an outgrowth of the Manhattan Project, the US was developing an atomic-bomb-propelled rocket called Orion that could have put humans on Mars by 1965. The Limited Test Ban Treaty of 1963, which banned nuclear explosions in space, scuttled the project.

ABOUT Richard H. Stephens:

Born in Simcoe, Ontario, in 1965, I was raised and still reside in Cambridge, Ontario. I began writing circa 1974, a bored child looking for something to while away the long, summertime days. My penchant for reading, 'The Hardy Boys,' led to an inspiration one sweltering summer afternoon, when my best friend and I thought, ‘We could write one of those.’ And so, I did.

As my reading horizons broadened, so did my writing. 'Star Wars' inspired me to write a 600-page novel about outer space that caught the attention of a special teacher, Mr. Woodley, who encouraged me to keep on writing.

A trip to a local book store saw the proprietor introduce me to Stephen R. Donaldson and Terry Brooks. My writing life was forever changed.

At 17, I left high school to join the working world to support my first son. For the next twenty-two years I worked as a shipper at a local bakery. At the age of 36, I went back to high school to complete my education. After graduating with honors at the age of thirty-nine, I became a member of our local Police Service, and worked for 12 years in the provincial court system.

In early 2017, I resigned from the Police Service to pursue my love of writing full-time. With the help and support of my lovely wife Caroline and our 5 children, I have now realized my boyhood dream.  More information about Richard can be found at: Award-winningFantasy Author | Richard H. James Webb releases a new Western novel called Tom's Revenge

Tom’s Revenge

An impressive Western debut by career cowboy James Webb

Released and published by Tuscany Bay Books

The book is available worldwide in print and e-format

HIDDEN IN PLAIN SITE

Tom Dufran was on the trail of one of the most malicious men to roam the west, with only the image on an old wanted poster to go on. The trail not only led him to Belle Fourche in the Dakota Territory, but also to cross paths with someone from his past. Aubrey Walters was only in town to purchase a herd of cattle, not to run into the man she thought had perished years ago. Now the memories and feelings of the past were flooding back in.

Did he feel the same way about her?

Would she be able to find out?

While that was unforeseen, giving countenance to the man to board the train was even more startling. A gross oversight that would allow him to fix the past.

Would he be able to rectify it in time?

About James:

James Edward Webb was born in 1981 and grew up on ranches around the western United States. With his fathers employment as a cowboy, James developed a lifelong fascination with the Old West. The charm of the rugged sophistication in the lives of those who lived in the westward expansion, was driven further with several experiences. Aside from growing up on the ranches where his father found employment, he had a chance to explore some of the remnants of that history. When James was 19 he joined the Army. In 2001 he married his wife, Tera, 2003 was deployed to Iraq, and in 2007,  after his separation from the military, they moved to Michigan where they have been raising their three children. He attended college and received a degree in art. He finds that writing is good therapy for his PTSD. In Tom’s Revenge he uses his love for the Old West to bring a deeper understanding of this disorder by expressing what he, as a veteran, deals with internally and externally. Other therapies that he uses are art and cooking with his wife, creating and trying new foods. From cover to cover Tom’s Revenge is his first published work including the cover art.

The son of a career solider, Gary developed a keen interest in military history at a young age. His family lived in various locations in Canada and also a three year posting to Germany. Over the years he developed a passion for writing short stories and essays. Several of those essays have been published in a national magazine. His grandfather fought in The Great War and four decades ago, Gary began researching Canada's involvement in that conflict. Another obsession of his, which began fifty years ago, is riding motorcycles, naturally enough without his parent's knowledge. The power of storytelling with Toastmaster and YA novelist, Mohammed Maxwel Hasan.

Welcome to Mohammed Maxwel Hasan! I had the priviledge of hearing Mohammed do a webinar for the Orangeville Public Library and thought it would be fun to learn more about him and his books!

If more people told exciting stories, the easier it would be to learn life's greatest lessons. After Mohammed Maxwel Hasan achieved the competent communicator status at Toastmasters and completed a creative writing course at the University of Toronto, he discovered the treasure trove of a well-crafted story. From organizing TEDx events to running youth programs, Mohammed found that the power of storytelling remains imperative for success.

What would you say are your strengths as an author?

Understanding that the story is not for me, it's for the readers. As a writer, it's very easy to get cocooned and to get easily discouraged when others don't share that burning passion about your writer. You aren't the sun in the solar system, so don't make everything revolve around you.

Proper pacing served as a strength in both novellas. When transitions between chapters move seamlessly, readers don't get jolted or ask questions. Great design is invisible.

Believable dialogue was another high point. One of the quickest ways to break immersion is to have incongruent dialogue (would you call someone "bae" in a 1500 medieval roundtable?)

How often do you write, and do you write using a strict routine?

I aimed for a daily word count. There were days where that elusive number wasn't reached, I still wrote something (even if it was a line). If I couldn't run, I walked. If I couldn't walk, I crawled.

The only strict part of my routine was to have something done each day. If the process was too harsh, it would have drained the whimsicality of storytelling. Fall in love with the process, not the product.

Five years from now, where do you see yourself as a writer?

If this pandemic taught us anything, it's to take things one day at a time. I see myself continuously growing and who knows, maybe a filmmaker could approach me seeing how to adapt one of my stories to the screen.

If you could offer one piece of advice to a novice writer, what would it be?

"Done is better than perfect, because perfect never gets done." The majestic feeling you get when you hold your book or see it on the shelves cannot be replicated. Don't let your stories wither away because of perfection.

What would you consider to be the best compliment a reader could give your book?

Your writing inspired me to write my own novella.

What are you working on now?

The idea of a mystery novella percolated for some time. If there's interest from readers, I'd be happy to hear it.

Exciting News! A new Wild Blue Mystery coming in March 2022!

It's been a while since I featured my books on here, so here we are. A new trend for a New Year. I'm planning to publish two books in 2022, the first of which comes out in March:

THE CONNED LADY

Book 5 in the Wild Blue Mystery Series

Eccentric romance novelist Mimsy Lexington has a secret. When she approaches Katie Mullins to help find details around her late husband’s death, Katie and her boyfriend Danny Walker are drawn into a web of lies and deceit. The deeper they dig, the more they realize the biggest dangers may lurk close to home and need to suspect everyone—including Mimsy.

Other books in the Wild Blue Mystery series:

Book 1: The Bookstore Lady

Danny Walker is tracking Paulina Chourney who is lucky to get out a bad situation before her boyfriend kills her. She arrives in a small town, changes her name, buys a bookstore and joins a local writing group to fade into anonymity. Until Danny Walker shows up and figures out who she is. When Danny disappears, she has to choose between spending her life on the run or standing up to face her past. Hopefully before the quirky townsfolk turn her death into a spectacle.

"I could visualize that bookstore, smell the coffee and pastries, and see the colorful characters. This book has lots of twists and turns, and I never knew who to trust, all the way to the end. I'll look for future books by this author." - Paul Carr

Book 2: The Mystery Lady

Wanna-be writer Lucy Stephen never wrote about murder until her husband moves out and she thinks some man in a blue car is stalking her, namely Danny Walker. When her husband and his girlfriend take her kids on vacation, Lucy discovers a hidden package of jewelry he desperately wants. The more she learns about the assorted pieces, the more Lucy realizes she may never see her kids again and needs to fight back with the help of the man who stalks her.

"Found the characters interesting and the story enjoyable. A nice cozy mystery." - Janet Walters

Book 3: The Bakery Lady

From the moment Leo Blue meets the tattoo artist 's sister Christina, he's drawn into a web of bread dough and lies. Christina Davidson has returned to Packham with a duffle bag full of secrets. Leo soon discovers her biggest secret is Christina's alter ego and her husband who stands accused of murdering an up-and-coming artist. He promises to help set things straight and plans to bring husband and wife together for Christmas—even if it costs him his sanity and the love of his life.

"Action, romance, suspense, and a killer. What more could you ask for. Really enjoyed the intrigue and the dialogue. Would love to meet Leo!" - Mary Ann O'Brien

Book 4: The Painted Lady

Leo Blue can't escape Packham nor the life of a private detective no matter how hard he tries. Six months after the murder of artist DJ Gage, the prices of Gage's paintings soar. When a woman winds up dead and a forgery is discovered in the local art gallery, Leo has to find a murderer and a forger. When people from Christina Davidson’s past turn up, her carefully constructed walls begin to crumble and the only one who can help her now is Leo.

"I really enjoyed this story. Christina and Leo are great characters and I was eager to see where there relationship would go from the last book, The Bakery Lady. Definitely worth getting." - Sonja11

What would you write if you knew you couldn't fail?

Hmm. That's a tough one. Honestly, fear of failure isn't huge for my writing ego. Don't misunderstand, I always worried about reader reactions to my story, and those negative reviews do hurt. But for me, I simply write the stories I have to tell and write them the best way I can. I've already stepped out of my box with my Creative Career Planning for Authors Workbook.  I knew I had important information to share with writer's, so I bit the bullet and wrote it. My next big step, the one I'm more afraid of, it the sequel to that book which is a life planner. It's about how I planned my life into a place of career success and general happiness. I'm worried that nobody will want to read a life planning book that isn't from a medical professional or life coach. But, again, I have information to share, so I'm putting it out there.

How do you know your book is finished?

I'm a pantser. I write by the seat of my pants. I create two well detailed main characters, and a couple minor players. Then, I set them loose and follow them to see where they go. I generally have a couple plot points in mind and know where they'll end up, I just don't know how they'll get there. The rough draft is done when they achieve their happily ever after. Of course the edits are next. That's tougher for me to know when it is finished. I make four to six passes through the entire book. I look for phrasing and comprehension flaws, plot holes, characters acting out of character for who they are.  I keep going until it feels right. Then, it's off to beta readers for feedback. After that comes another two rounds of edits and a professional editor for the final polish. In short, the book is finished when it reads nicely, the story is finished, and it has an emotional impact on me.

Do you write full or part time?

I am a full time writer. I write seven days a week. I rarely take a day off. If I'm not plotting, or writing, I'm working on social media, book keeping, advertising. There's a lot of behind the scenes work when you are an author. But generally, I spent six to eight hours a day at this writing job. When the words are flowing well, I can spend up to twelve hours behind my desk.

How long, on average, does it take you to write a book?

Each book is its own entity. The story itself determines how long it will be. Generally, it takes about 30 days to write a 65K word romance. Some stories are harder, some are faster. I just take the words as they come, and when they don't come, I force them. My record is 48k in 8 days, by hand with a pen and paper. I'm old school, my mind works better with a pen than with a keyboard.

What is the most difficult part of the artistic process?

Honestly, this varies day by day. Some days I cannot write a description. Other days, all my characters sound the same when they talk. But generally, it's remembering to include all of the senses. I want at least three senses in every scene as I find that brings the scene to life. Touch, scent, sight, sound, taste. They all need to be there and add to the scene without being blatantly visible.

What is your next project?

I am a multi-project author. When I'm struggling with one, another takes its place. I hop back and forth. But in a general sense, I'm planning to finish my Coyote Creek and Three Moon Falls series next. When I'm not working on them, I'm working on that life planning workbook, and a book about positive self-talk and how it can change your life.

A LESSON IN LOVE:  (EBook and print)
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B086VQKYY5

Fired from her job and accused of a crime she has not committed, Tricia Paxton retreats to Coyote Creek to recover from trauma and rebuild her career. Carefree bachelor, Riley Flint, has problems, too. While focusing on building a veterinary practice, his plans grind to a halt when a daughter he has never known enters his life. Accepting the troublesome news that the mother has passed away and her maternal grandparents cannot offer their care, he assumes the responsibility of raising his daughter.
