Round Robin Blog Fest June 2022

Welcome back to another Round Robin Blog Fest! These are always so much fun and interesting to learn more about our authors and their work. This month’s topic is fully loaded! We had a lot to choose from:

Have you ever included current social, political, or environmental problems in any of your stories or thought about doing so? Why or why not?

Such as:

  • Do you ever include politics in your stories (why and how?)
  • Do you ever address topics like discrimination or race relations?
  • After your characters with or against law enforcement and do you include the current climate of anti-law enforcement in your writing
  • have you incorporated gay/lesbian characters?
  • how does the current economic climate feature in your books?
  • Have you ever included current wars in your books?
  • Has terrorism ever appeared in any of your stories?
  • Do any of your characters address going green/global warming?

So interesting that’s the topic that came up this month! I’ve been tossing ideas around for my newest Glitter Bay Mystery for 2023 and adding a subplot for Quinn who is a transgender character. (She’s also one of my favorites, but don’t tell the others!) As well as being Pride Month, we have a fabulous local celebration called Celebrate Your Awesome – which is totally about being who you are!

Quinn lives that motto now and now that she’s moved to a small town and roommates with her new bestie Sage, she’s decided to challenge some of those small town beliefs. She’s started designing gowns and outfits for drag queens and is on a mission to start her own Celebrate Your Awesome, which still needs a good name. Lucky for me, I have a lot of amazing minds to pick while I work out the plot line. I’m friends with several people involved!

While I’ve generally shied away from wars and other heavy topics so far, this topic is near and dear. I’m sure there will be a little “going green” in there as well since Sage, owner of a vintage boutique called Vintage Sage, isn’t big on letting things be tossed away. Discrimination will play a role as well. Right now, Book 3 is in the planning phase while I finish off another book for October – Dead Man’s Doll will be out this fall! – but I have ideas galore for Sage, Quinn, and Laken in Glitter Bay including researching a famous Marilyn Monroe gown and an elderly drag queen, among other things.

In my Sugarwood Mysteries, the topic of land use and environment always seem to come up. Audra's husband Rex works for a development company that is focused on buying up most of Sugarwood and area to build new homes. Not totally a bad thing, except when bodies start to pop up. Currently, I'm working on Book 2 and brought in a few new characters and reveal a few new secrets. Complete with new book covers for both books. I can't wait.

Let's go blog hopping and find out what the other great authors have focused on!

  1. I like your way of using a character who exhibits some of the current social unrest and presenting them in a positive way. We need to judge people on their heart and soul, - are they kind, loving, generous, smart, caring etc and not on the labels that society puts on them. So, having characters that we can LIKE helps a reader to have a more positive attitude toward inclusiveness.

  2. Sounds like a wonderful project. It's an excellent idea to present stigmatized people as human, "just-like-you-and-me" while still having fun.

  3. Your characters all sound interesting with important goals!

  4. People always fear/hate what they don't understand. If you've never met a person different from you, either racially, religiously, or sexually, you tend to suspect them of being nefarious. Once you meet and get to know folks, you realize we're all just people who want to live life our own way, safely, seeking love and a sense of purpose. That should unite us all.

  5. Everyone is different (unique). Yet we always have something is common. I like that about your characters.
